Ever read a book and felt like it could be a movie? This was one of those books. I pictured it as a Hallmark or Lifetime holiday movie. Which made me so happy, completely escaping into a cheesy, slightly unbelievable rom com of a book. And sometimes, those are needed and the best kinds of books!
This was a cute book about more than just an up and down love story between Quinn & Minnie. It was also a story of Minnie finding herself.

Say what you will about this mildly cheesy romcom story, but I adored it.
I really liked the idea of this book. But it was sort of underwhelming. The main character was really self absorbed and not in a vain way, in a woe is me way. It was a little boring to read about how awful she felt her life was after a while. She was generally ungrateful and horrible and I didn’t like her much. On contrast the “love interest” was kind and generous and completely undeserving of the way she treated him.
They were thrown together so many different times and just narrowly missed interacting, but each flash back was a bit of a let down, there was no real climax or pinnacle in this book. I think is what the real problem was. The supporting characters had infinitely more personality than the main characters and are one of the only reasons I made it through this novel.

I listened to the audiobook version and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. The storyline was somewhat predictable at times, and diversity was lacking (people of color were mostly background props.) However, I enjoyed the author’s writing style, and the main characters developed and had depth and dimension. Overall, a fun holiday read for anyone who enjoys rom-coms.
Overall really enjoyed this one!! However, I did have two issues with this sweet little book:
1. The dates at the start of each chapter got a bit confusing. For a large part of the book the date/years flip around quite a bit and I found myself struggling to remember the year of the previous chapter and how that related to the current year. Toward the end of the book it stays in the same year for the most part so I felt like the dates were unnecessarily distracting at that point.
2. Ohhh man. So many false starts! I’m a big fan of the slow-burn romances and this one definitely makes you wait for it!! That was actually okay but I really would have loved even just ONE really juicy love scene before the end!! (I like at least a small amount of smutty seasoning in my stories.)

It was a cute concept but it didn’t make me swoon as much as I would like in a romance.
Synopsis: Minnie Cooper & Quinn Hamilton are complete opposites; one has lived a privileged life of wealth & comfort while the other has struggled with insecurity, financial woes, and bad luck...like being named after a car. But, after a happenstance meeting at a New Year’s Eve party, they realize they both share a birthday, New Year’s Day... and a connection that spans their entire lives.
If Minnie & Quinn are such opposites, why do they find themselves continually drawn to each other? WIll Minnie’s insecurities keep her from exploring this undeniable connection or will Quinn’s struggle with commitment squash any chance of any connection to even blossom?
Review: This book absolutely captured my heart. Cousens did an impeccable job of creating both characters & a storyline with depth & appeal. I seriously want to be Minnie’s best mate at this point. My heart was one hundred percent invested in Minnie’s life, well-being, and eventual outcome. She was likable, relatable, and someone I found myself championing for. And I don’t know about you, but God if I didn’t find myself wanting to just hug the crap out of Quinn the entire book...was it just me? Yes? Yeah, I’m weird like that.
One of the best rides of this entire book was the ‘will they, won’t they’. I continually found myself physically leaning into the book like “Is this it?!?!? Is it about to happen!?!?!?”
Besides all that fun THE best part of This Time Next Year was the character development of both Minnie & Quinn. The way the storyline was presented allowed you to really get to see the progression of both characters as they walked through their journey of self-discovery & in my opinion, self-acceptance. I cannot recommend this book enough y’all. This is truly gonna be in my top 5 of 2020!
