Unfortunately, this one just didn’t do it for me.

The premise was interesting, but I never rlly connected to either main character, and I found their dynamic… fine, if a bit frustrating. They just continually had the same conversation over and over again for like… a third of the book. “I’m in love with you, have been for years, you’re my whole life, but of course you don’t feel the same abt me” aaannnnd then the other one says BASICALLY THE SAME THING and then rinse repeat. And, if I had connected to either character and their dynamic then I could have gotten over the fact the the writing style felt a little off, awkward and slightly juvenile to me, but bc I WASNT connecting with anything, that felt more glaring to me, too. Which I always hate to say, bc it makes me feel like a snob, but there was a lot of dialogue (both actual, and inner monologue stuff) that just… did not feel at all how ppl actually talk to each other. I feel bad saying it but a lot of it felt off or cringy or slightly cheesy.

I’ll give this author another shot, but this one wasn’t it, for me.

I picked this book up on a whim cause I've been in a bit of a reading slump lately ugh and I ended up reading it in one sitting. It was actually hard for me to put down which is always a nice surprise.

The book is about Emma who comes home after spending 18 months in Africa teaching children. The day before she left she ended up spilling her heart out to her best friends mom Vanessa who she's been secretly in love with for like the past 10 years or something.
The novels then follows up on what happens when she comes back and has to face all these feelings again and what could happen if wink wink Vanessa actually felt the same way back.

There was a lot more angst in this than I anticipated though. Like a lot, a lot more. A lot of the book was just the two main characters arguing about things that could've easily been avoided if they just communicated with each other which for some reason characters in books never do?

Other than that it was good though, there was a lot of well written hella steamy scenes thrown in which I will never complain about.

I would totally recommend this if you're into age-gap, steamy romances. But like I stated above, be prepared for the angst and poor communication skills.

I ended up rating this 3.5★

Holy shit! I made the mistake of reading the end of chapter 9 while in a ride-share. With my parents sitting by my side! Jesus, what a terrible, terrible mistake. Torture! Lmao

But for real? The biggest mistake I made was taking this long to read this delightful tale.

It was heartbreakingly beautiful, a really gorgeous story. It oozed sensuality, sexiness. Got me hot and bothered on so MANY occasions, hahaha. It did get a bit too mushy (for my taste) for a moment, but it was nice nonetheless. Both MCs have lots of insecurities/hang-ups and really could do with some counselling, but they were lovely together. I'm excited to read the Teach Me and revisit these two, hoping it'll be at least as good as Mrs. Middleton.

p.s.: okay, so I'm about to turn 33, where's my 50yo MILF? I really need to get some (new) friends.

My main issue with this book was the age of one of the protagonists, and it's not the one you'd think. Emma is canonically a thirty-something woman but the way she is written feels like a twenty something person, just trying to figure out their life. That really took me out of things. This was a decent attempt at this kind of story but honestly, it was done better in a more recent book ("Mistakes were made"), because the ages were more accurate, we see the beginning of the whole thing, and the characterization was a bit deeper and therefore more enjoyable for me.
