This was just what I needed. Beloved characters in an engaging (if a bit obvious) storyline. Thoroughly enjoyed my time with Maisie!

Aptly titled. Maisie deals with two mad people. One of them is her assistant’s wife who has had a nervous breakdown due to the the death of her daughter. Maisie intervenes to upgrade her care.

But the real threat is a mad veteran who threatens the government for not taking care of Great War veterans. Maisie is close by when another veteran blows himself up and is quickly hired by Scotland Yard to assist. Soon the threat of chemical weapons looms with demonstrations of dead dogs and birds. It keeps escalating. Maisie even gets to meet the Prime Minister. It’s a race against time and some surprising twists as military intelligence gets involved. But are they helping or hindering? Another solid caper that seems to wrap up early. But Maisie always ferrets out the truth.

I love this series so much! It's been a while since I've visited with Maisie and her friends and family. Much too long. I have missed her. I especially like listening to the books as the narrator, Orlagh Cassidy, is perfect for Maisie and every character, but especially Maisie. Her voice is exactly as I imagine it in my cranium when I read them as print books.
I like how the story is more than the mystery to be solved. The surrounding characters have a story to tell too. This time, it's more with Maisie's assistant Billy's family. His wife is still immersed in her grief after the death of their young daughter. Her grief is so much that she has become neglectful of her sons and husband and they fear she will self-harm. Her doctor puts her in an asylum that does more harm than good.
The rest of the story is the mystery of the occurrences of gas attacks. Who is it and what else are they planning? Maisie is drawn in.
It's an amazingly told tale and I was sucked in immediately. I sat in the driveway or parking lot for just a little more time with the story and the characters.
It's a history lesson as much as it is a story and mystery. The aftermath of WWI in all its ugliness.
I can definitely recommend this book, this series and this author.

I hope at sometime that Maisie’s assistant Billy gets a break; it seems with every new book that something else in his life goes wrong.
This book follows the aftermath of war theme still, this time in regards to shell shock. Both the disregard and lack of sympathy that was prevalent and the work that was being done to prove its validity and the damage it caused.
I thought the author did a fantastic job of portraying both frames of mind and the often disastrous aftermath of World War One.
