I wanted to love this book, but it felt all over the place. The hallucinations left me really not caring, the clues as to what was real and not were too vague. The chemistry felt off. I would have preferred the ghosts being actual ghosts.

What an unexpected read. Plenty of plot twists to keep the pages turning. The added layer of spookiness sprinkled throughout was a nice surprise. However, I felt that the plot twists muddled the storyline. At the beginning of the book we're focused on the death of multiple family members and moving on in the face of such overwhelming tragedy that keeps striking the family. Multiple references are made to different parts of the country idolizing different Gods. I can get behind that. Very Greek/Roman inspired. But then we're talking about a secret door that leads them to wherever their heart desires. That fun little nugget of a plot twist popped up so unexpectedly and quickly it left my mind reeling. But wait, we're not done. Suddenly, we've moved past the door to psychosis, weird dragon-man creatures, and women who cry oil tears reeking havoc on the family. I can appreciate a good plot twist with the best of them but these didn't seem to flow in any sort of harmonic way. Once you've had time to come to terms with and figure out the new direction the book is heading in, you're struck with another plot twist that is so out in left field with the rest of the story. I just wasn't into the sporadic nature of the twists. Three stars for the authors imagery and keeping me engaged enough to want to finish, if for no other reason than feeling like I invested enough time to see it through.

not as scary as i’d hope it to be. way too many absolutely unnecessary cookie cutter characters. i'm not really sure there’s a plot. and like half of this book makes zero sense. soooooo yea this one feels like the waist of my time

Spoilers lie ahead...
I read this because a friend did and said that it took a bit to start up, but then it got very good. I do agree that it took a while (hours, really) to start up and then got a lot better, but I feel like there were so many questions that were left unanswered.
I often tell my husband about the books I'm reading and usually within my recap I say things such as, "And then something else happened, but I can't remember." about smaller details. With this book it was me just sitting there realizing... okay something happened and it just straight up wasn't explained. I didn't forget anything - there was just no explanation.
The lead up to the book actually getting going seemed like it took forever. I don't necessarily think that anything in the beginning could have been skipped, looking back on it, but I found myself wishing that once it did pick up that the portions of the book that were exciting had actually had the same level of care as the beginning.
This book definitely felt like it should have been a series. One of the reasons I picked it up was, admittedly, because it wasn't a series (I have a nasty habit of picking up the first book in a series, not realizing that the second, third, fourth, etc. book isn't out yet and forgetting the entire plot by the time the next book does come out and was hoping to avoid it), but there was so much about the world that I felt should have been better expanded upon.
SpoilerFor example, you find out that the whole reason that the sisters are in this mess is because of a trickster who made a deal with the step-mother so that she could have a son... they spend so much time explaining about the girl's lives and specifically about Pontus who doesn't even have any role in the book, but you don't even know that there are tricksters until he's revealed about an hour until the book's end. Did I miss something? Was that explained in the beginning and I just forgot? Maybe it's because the book is based off of mythology that I should have known going in? I would love it if someone could shed some light on this.

Overall, I don't think that the book's bad. I think it was a good story. I wouldn't read it again, but I would probably recommend it to friends. I just feel as though it suffered from a long lead up and a rushed ending.

Intrigue, mystery, death, and gods.
I was sucked in from the beginning, never knowing what on earth was going to happen next. Annaleigh was an interesting character to follow, watching her madness spiral in a world where things just make no sense. Some twists and turns that I never expected, especially the step mother. Unable to decipher truth from lies, reality from nightmares. I wish the ending had explained things a little further - what happened to their father? They never discuss a body. Her human brother, did they find his body? Their father took him from the room and was never seen again. The misunderstandings in the end with the memories being warped, are there apologies? The girls being terrified of the MC, thinking she’d killed their youngest sister - and other sisters. What happened to the Weeping Woman god-thing? She just vanished? Same with the trickster? Just felt like so much was unsaid.
I wish the seven months chapter at the end filled in more blanks, I just want these girls - the last remaining - to have proper happy endings.
Also, I love the romance with Cassius - but even that was a little off for me. Felt like I could never trust him with everything else going wrong.
Still loved it. Highly recommended.
