Felt like there was supposed to be a point where everything just clicked but it never did...

Well, I made it a little more than half-way through this, but I'm tapping out. As much as I adore Ishiguro's prose, I just simply cannot read one more page of what is essentially an entitled, pompous dingbat's anxiety dream. I was at first intrigued by the fluidity of the plot, but it gets exhausting quite quickly.

I could take a few hundred pages of surreal dream sequence with no payoff but this went on far too long

I tried. I REALLY tried. Half way through this incredibly odd book, I felt as though I had wasted all the time it took me to get that far. It didn't help that I had just brought home a huge bagful of interesting-looking books. So, I abandoned The Unconsoled. I seriously kept trying to figure out what Ishiguro was trying to impart by this meandering, long-winded book without a plot. Life is just too short.

A bafflingly lovely book. For all of its strangeness, the story is quite normal and even, I hate to admit, at times relatable. Ryder is not a likeable narrator, and I was often frustrated with him. Then again, who hasn't been victim to a rapid torrent of life over three days, confusing (inexplicable?) geography, and the plague that is trying to remember almost anything about your own life.

It's essentially the narration of someone's absolutely nonsensical frustrating dream. Anxiety-inducing because the narrator is unreliable and forgetful, and the plot is vague / barely existent because it's literally like a dream.
