I almost have no words. This book is such a master piece. As a black woman I didn’t think I could be educated by a white man or woman on my blackness. I have not only been put in my place when it comes to realizations of my own biases, but I have also been educated on what a decent human being acts like. I’ve had so many revelations reading this book and I am coming out not only a whole new person who will catch myself when I subconsciously judge another human based on things that are on the outside, but a person who recognizes the flaws in her thinking and someone who wants to practice changing them everyday. This book will stick with me forever!
There were some great quotes and inspiring parts, but overall a snoozer.
An amazing book looking at racism through the honest eyes of a white journalist. An incredible read which should be a must read by every high school student.

How different it must be to experience life as a different race. Especially such a controversial one. I can't even imagine how my life would feel like if I were black. It's a shame that society still has issues with African Americans. How much time needs to pass? The stereotypes are still so strongly present. One look at an African American (male or female) and a large amount of people still instantly think of a stereotype. They still judge these people. It's true for many other races as well, but blacks definitely have it harder I think. It's still mind blowing to me what has even happened in the past. How life used to be. How acceptable it was. It's insane. I would love to experience life as an African American female. How different would it be... I'd love to try it. I can hardly even imagine.
For Feb 2010 Book Club. Insightful and interesting. The afterwords were worth reading as well.

Bumping my score down to 1 stars, because I have grown a lot as a person in these 10+ years, and I no longer see the value in this book. For 1961, sure, but for 2022? No.
Go read black authors instead.

I feel kind of uncomfortable about a white man telling a black mans story, and some of the things he said were just a bit.... eh. But over all I appreciated the insight. Specially for it's time. I also think it brings up ideas and thoughts that white readers should be thinking about, which a truly black written story may not have done, sadly, because as this book points out, white people don't want to listen to black people.
I don't know. I am torn.
I think I lean on the side of this book being important for it's time. I feel like this book opened doors for ignorant white people to start actually listening to what real black people have to say. I hope so, at least.

I first read this book in middle school and remember that it had a great influence on me, but had forgotten the details. When I saw it at a used book store last week, I jumped at the chance to read it again, and was glad I did. Through adult eyes, it moved me again. The parallels between happenings in the book and in present day society are horrifying (have we not learned? I guess not). This book should be required reading for all humans.
Very powerful. We are all humans. The human psyche cannot see it any other way when you are completely faced with the reality of the mundane similarities that connect us all. This book does not try to grandstand. It shows how utter alien life was between two groups of people, who lived so close together, all because of pigment.
