This is a very short book - I read it in a couple of hours. It is also possibly the worst book I’ve ever read. If you’re looking for evidence of male authors writing women characters poorly this is your book. Countless times I had to stop and reread the truly awful descriptions of the thoughts and behaviour of the central character Siân to check that I hadn’t misread something. Dismal.

As expected, a very enjoyable novella. I enjoy all Michel Faber's writings.

I great little story, you connect with the two characters to such a degree that you wish for a happy ever after. Well done in just a little over 100 pages. It even finds the space for a Victorian thrill and mystery.

I've read this before and enjoyed it, but this time I enjoyed it even more. I just enjoy the way Faber writes, the way he crafts a sentence, and also the empathy with which he writes. This is a subtle story, but it has layers to it, a sense of mystery, and it feels like a very satisfying short story/novella to me.
Siân is working on an archeological dig at Whitby abbey when she meets Mack and his dog on the steps leading up to the abbey. With the start of a relationship comes the mystery of a centuries old manuscript in a bottle that needs to be unfolded. Of course, the story is written by Michel Faber and so the actual mystery or the relationship are less important that what it all means for Sian in her quest to find herself.
‘The job is trickier than I thought. You’re going to have to decide what’s more important to you, Mack: knowing what that document says, or keeping it the way you like’.
A short but totally engaging novella that I really enjoyed will reread somewhen in the future.

Another great story from a master of writing human nature, in a way that makes us feel less along in the world
