This was my first book by this author, and I definitely liked the writing. This series has a definitely X-Men-esque feel to it, which I enjoyed. I would have loved there to have been some actual relationship-building, though. The MC's had the chemistry, but they were at odds until the very end, and they seemed to have very little page time spent building the "them". Still, the world-building was good and I am looking forward to seeing where this series goes!

I wanted to take a break from the excellent Rifter series I'm ploughing through as I'm on holiday and my attention is back and forth with family time. So this is perfect to read in the evening and in the garden with family.
I really enjoyed this I had some problems with our two Mc's. One TSTL and the other emotionally all over the place/possessive but they still were endearing enough to keep reading. The mystery and challenges were engaging and the plot moved smoothly.
I wasn't keen on [b:The Alpha King|33805098|The Alpha King (Kingdom of Askara #1)|Victoria Sue|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1483708658s/33805098.jpg|54708883]. Sues only other work I've read ( unfair treatment of characters and so-so writing) and Five Minutes Longer (Enhanced1) isn't lyrical but flows a lot more smoothly.
Good mutant/FBI novel 3.5/4 stars.Onto book two!

Independent reviewer for Divine Magazine, I was gifted the AUDIO file of this book.
Some 30 years ago, children began waking up with a mark on their faces and enhanced abilities: speed, strength, mental abilities. Talon, now given the job of setting up a human/enhanced task force within the FBI, was one of the first. He doesn't want to work with normals on his team, but this task force is his, and the other enhanced team members, last chance at becoming a useful member of society, not just a mark on his face. Finn wanted to join the FBI forever, and worked hard to get to apply, but he is not accepted. Instead he gets a cryptic phone and flies to Florida, and finds himself face to face with several huge enhanced, one of whom makes Finn want that boyfriend he never had. They have four weeks to make this team work, do or, quite possibly, die.
Oooooo-eeeee! Loved this! Different, very different and different is always good in my book!
The guys on the team really don't want Finn around, but know they gotta put up with him, at least for a little bit, but he grows on them, Talon especially but Talon fights that attraction all the bloody way, and when he finally gives up the fight?? Oh yes ma'am, that boy falls hard and he falls FAST! And when Finn gets caught in the cross fire at a bank robbery?? Talon goes all MAJOR Alpha-Male- Protect-What's-Mine!
I loved that not everything is fully revealed about the guys abilities, I think there is quite a bit more to come!
Nick J Russo narrates and he does a sterling job! He's a firm favourite of mine, and each and every time I listen to his work, it becomes my NEW favourite!
Russo's voices are clear and distinctive, even in multi person conversations. He reading voice is deep and even and I had no trouble, not at all, keeping up.
He gets cross all of Finn's emotions and his reactions to the guys, to Talon. His intense dislike of his brother and how his mum was with his dad. Russo gets across all of Talon's fighting, and that boy fights hard, his feelings for Finn, and you get just how much Finn means to him, when he thinks Finn is lost.
This is book one, there appears to be an underlying story arc running through these books, and I look forward to watching that unfold, and to watching these guys fall, like dominoes, one by one.
Off to listen to book 2, which is a continuation of Finn and Talon's story.

My second book by this author, recommended to me by Monika, and I am so glad I gave her another try.
This was an exciting and emotional story, just how I like them.
I enjoyed the Enhanced theme, kinda like Xmen without all the physical looks. Talon was my perfect big guy refusing to follow his heart until almost too late. Finn was so sweet. I love a guy that comes from a harsh/unhappy background.
If I had any complaints it was right at the end Sorry just my feelings where I think there's just a little too much going on just for excitement/dramas sake.
But overall a great idea and I'm looking forward to reading about the rest of the team, Eli especially.

Adams way of bringing Finn back to life didn't work for me. I mean he just did what the paramedics did, but maybe a stronger charge. Finn I felt should have been brought back like people that fall through ice, where the body is slowed down rather than stopped which is how I thought Talon worked his mojo. I just felt with the timing of the rescue Finn might not of been fully dead so to speak. But overall a great idea and I'm looking forward to reading about the rest of the team, Eli especially.

This book was soooo close to being good, but Ol Vickie can't seem to stop her own characters from being OOC.

I enjoyed the team dynamics, the subtle changing of the enhanced view of having regular partners - though I'm pretty sure they all don't want partners.
If the 2nd book were about someone else on the team and not Finn and Talon again I might read it, not that I believe Finn and Talon's story is complete. Just that I don't really want to read them as the main characters again.
That said - I also want the bad guy to get what he deserves so I may yet read book 2.

Second time through on audio. I'm reminded why I gave this one 3.5 stars. I think I was being charitable and I think 3 stars is more accurate. There were some major sins here:
1. Fat-phobia. Look, I get unflattering descriptions of overweight people, even if I don't care for it at all. But using obesity as an indicator of a Bad Person for your characters? That's just lazy plotting and even more offensive.
2. Talon is a d*ck.
3. Coincidences: Your shortcut for lazy plotting!
In the words of many a parent: I'm not upset, I'm just disappointed.

The cruel words he says to Finn are unforgivable in my opinion. Realistically that should create all kinds of trust issues in any future interactions, but it gets completely glossed over.3. Coincidences: Your shortcut for lazy plotting!

Finn just happens to be in the bank when the robbery goes down. OK, I guess? But Finn also just happens to be in Adam's room at the exact moment when it gets raided? That's stretching things. A lot. (Also never mind the fact that Finn is hailed as a hero after that raid when he greatest contribution to things was, um, dying). In the words of many a parent: I'm not upset, I'm just disappointed.
This book's premise very similar to [a:Charlie Cochet|5621569|Charlie Cochet|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1513980580p2/5621569.jpg]'s THIRDS series and [a:Santino Hassell|4942228|Santino Hassell|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1445991731p2/4942228.jpg]'s Community. It is really is a hybrid of these two series with a little bit of an X-Men thrown in for good measure. Despite having all the hallmarks of a series destined for me to absolutely love ... I feel relatively lukewarm about it. Perhaps my biggest struggle with this book was the lack of serious chemistry between the two MCs ... but more than that, Talon's strangely inappropriate, inconsistent and possessive behavior ... But despite the short-comings, I did eventually enjoy this book ... I just wish there was a tiny bit more in the chemistry department. I've since moved on to book two in the hopes that some of the past issues will resolve themselves ... I really do want to like this series ...
