*3.35* This is a MM, law enforcement, enhanced humans (think X-Men), virgin H, movie-like story. It had SO MUCH potential.

Finn has wanted to be an FBI agent sense he was 14. He has a shitty home life including an a-hole brother, a father who was a wounded veteran (eventually took his own life), and an awful, self-centered mother.

Talon is an enhanced human who doesn't want a human partner.

You can clearly see what the author had in mind for these two, but the relationship isn't developed very well, it's clunky and disjointed. Finn had decent character development, but Talon was a complete mystery.

The story reminded me of one of those old MF historical romances were the h gets injured, she proves herself over and over again and the hero is a complete ass. And then at the very end of the book the H is like nvm my past behavior, I was a jerk and now I love you.

The biggest drag on this story was the multiple on top of multiple misunderstandings.

Pleasantly surprised.

I got this book on a whim and wasn’t sure if I was going to like it. FBI and cop books remind me too much of the Cut & Run series and I always find myself comparing them. However, this book was pretty good. Loved the characters and the storyline. Kind of excited to read book 2.

This one was an enjoyable read. It reminded me of Charlie Cochet's THIRDS series. Instead of shifters, however, most of Victoria Sue's HEROs (you'll get it when you read the book) are Enhanced (like the mutants in X-Men).

The main protagonist is Finn (I have a soft spot for this MC because of this name), a human aka a "regular" who wants to join the FBI so bad. Actually, he really just wants to get away from his abusive mother and brother. He gets set up to join the Human Enhanced Rescue Organization (HERO) where he is to be paired with an Enhanced. Since this is still the first book, he's the only regular in the team.

I like that Finn is a person who's determined to succeed. He has dyslexia and had been keeping it secret for fear that he would be rejected from trying out for the FBI because of it. It just proves, though, how strong he is -- he will persevere to learn a lot and know more just to fulfill his dreams.

Talon Valdez, the head of the HERO unit, is the typical broody alpha male. Although he calls himself an ass, I don't think he's that bad. Certainly, he's not a douche. Also, he takes it on himself to protect the team (especially those with more extreme abilities who are more in danger of getting shipped to a lab), which meant trying to get Finn kicked out of the unit -- supposedly. Instead, he admires Finn's dedication and helps him out because he wanted to give Finn a chance to succeed.

All in all, it's a pretty good story with a lot of very interesting characters. There are rarely any women here, which is a bit eyebrow-raising. (Are all Enhanced males though? I don't think a female one was every mentioned in the book.) But the action scenes were fun and I liked that the characters didn't ramble or become preachy, which can be common in a book that has an obvious theme centered on discrimination and national security.

I think it fell flat with the mystery or case they were trying to solve, though. It felt like the action scenes just jumped out of nowhere to keep the reader from getting bored, although the CLIMAX -- Well, that was a really, really nice scene. I did not expect that about one of the character's abilities. Plus, what happened to Finn will add a pretty interesting dynamic to his relationship with Talon in the next books.

Well, this was really good... until the end. I've read one other Victoria Sue novella, The Innocent Auction and here was the beginning of my review...
It would've been a solid 4 historical gay romance but the extra far fetched drama in the end just made it go down in 1. believably and 2. enjoyment.

And that pretty much sums up this one too except that I would've been on the fence between a 4 and a 5 on this one and ended up almost giving it a 3 because of the ridiculous and far fetched ending. For Finn to be in the wrong place at the wrong time once, OK, but twice, and then the reasoning
Spoiler The guy takes Finn because "he is a friend" of his childhood friend, not because he is "the agent", then he uses him as a bargaining tool to what, make the head of the FBI task force kill someone in rage? I didn't get what this was supposed to do. Turn moral support, right, wrong. And like they wouldn't see it was forced. Next, if he does kill him then the other guy will kill the boy?
WTF stupid ass drama. And of course the save comes right after the kill. Nope stupid ass ending and I am so mad I want to give it a 2 but the rest of the story was 4 1/2 and maybe could have been a 5. Really really nonsensical ending just to create drama which was bad. Outright bad. Since she did this with the historical mm romance that I read, above quote. I just think that is what she thinks is a good ending. Nope and I feel like giving it a 3. I loved it until that crap though. Her endings suck. I might try one more in this series but if it has the same kind of ending, I quit.
adventurous

Seems like a THIRDS rip off (even down to the mutations being possibly caused by insecticide). I thought the special powers (enhanced) were kinda interesting, but the chemistry was fairly non-existent (frankly how the MCs could have gotten to know each other with all the time Finn was in the hospital idek). The relationship seemed to be based on lust/comfort with not a lot of verbal communication.

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Review:

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

This was a wonderful story. The world that includes the enhanced humans was well thought out and I didn’t feel like I was missing anything when it came to the background of the story. Talon and his team have continued to stand by the fact that they don’t want regular humans on their team. And in walks Finn, he breaks down all the walls that Talon has put up without really pushing to which is the most scary thing for Talon.

Finn isn’t quite what Talon expects from reading his file and can’t help but be intrigued by the different depths he has. Finn knows that being on this task force is his last chance to make his dreams come true, but his family, past and Talon’s issues may make it impossible for it to happen. Both have made some mistakes and make new assumptions that may tear them apart.

In this story I can feel how desperate Finn is to make this opportunity work and then his defeat when he knows that it’s never going to happen. Every time they get close Talon feels he has to push Finn away and keeps playing push and pull with his feelings. Once Talon gets some sense knocked into him he fully realizes the mistakes he has made and will do anything to get Finn back on the team and in his life. This is a wonderful beginning to what I hope is a new series and I hope to read more about these two and the other members of the team.

Cover art by AngstyG is great and sets the tone for the story well.

This book reminded me of THIRDS. But that did not bother me, I still liked it, I am a huge fan of superheroes.

I loved Finn he was sweet, determined and just lovely. Talon, well let’s just say he really frustrated me the way he treated Finn , he should have had to grovel like on his knees.

The rest of the team I Loved.... Gael, Vance, Sawyer and Eli were amazing secondary characters.

There were some smexy scenes which I liked.
