Liked this one quite a bit more than #1, The Light Years. Happily going on to the next!

Oh god, I love these books so much... they are filled with such perfect detail and feeling, and each of the characters feels like a real person who might step off the page, and keeps living on even after I close the book.

I like the extensive sections of Polly, Louise, and Clary, but I will admit the smaller choppier bits from the perspectives of the whole family, their staff, and their friends, are my favorite. I like dipping in and out of all these points of view. The war is so omnipresent, and yet life goes on, and you really feel the weary press of time on every page.

I feel like I should say more, but I'm just astonishingly in love with these books and I can't wait to read more.

I'm all in on this series. They can sometimes drag in the middle, but you care so much about what happens, that it doesn't matter.

This is a perfect book to get lost in, I enjoyed the first but it’s been a while since I picked it up and I’d forgotten how easy you slip into the narrative, I just couldn’t put it down. Howard has a genius gift of putting you in the characters heads, I can’t wait to carry on with the series.

The theme is what it says on the cover. The book is set from 1939-1941. I was caught by surprise by the abrupt ending. The Cazalet children are getting older and suffering adolescent angsts. The boys don’t feature very much, except for Neville who is becoming delinquent. Meanwhile the adults are facing mortality and adultery. Now I have the characters sorted out in my mind, I find it makes for absorbing listening
