Carissa has done it again. The Fallen and the Kiss of Dusk was a phenomenal continuation of Mische and Asar’s story. Carissa’s stories are always filled with so much feeling and this was no exception. I spent so much time crying and forgetting to breathe. Carissa’s characters are flawless in their complexities and her world-building is exemplary. I would happily give an arm and leg for a full length novel or series just about the history of the gods.

Mische and Asar burrowed into my heart. Something about their histories and their relationship just has me in an absolute chokehold. And Luce! Sweet Luce!! I feel like I could cry just thinking about them and it’s been a few days since I finished this book.

One of my favorite things about this book was the appearances made by past characters in the Nyaxia universe. I definitely recommend reading Slaying the Vampire Conqueror before starting Fallen if you haven’t already read it. It’s not necessary, but adds a lot of context and Sylina and Atrius are incredible characters who deserve your love.

Spoilers for The Songbird and the Heart of Stone below:

The Fallen and the Kiss of Dusk picks up where The Songbird and the Heart of Stone leaves off. Mische and Asar have been separated after failing to complete the resurrection of Alarus and killing Atroxus, that filthy rapist son of a bitch. The world is plunged into eternal darkness and the underworld is at risk of collapsing. Mische, unexpected ally in tow, and Asar fight to be reunited, save both the world of the living and the underworld, and keep the gods from entering a full out war. They are faced with sacrifice upon sacrifice, betrayals, and heartbreak. And I ate up every single bit of it.

I expected a lot from this book as I lived The Songbird and the Heart of Stone and generally love Carissa Broadbent's writing.

I loved Asar and Mische in book 1 and went through it reading the ending.

I don't know why but this book didn't click.

Characters felt flat, plot felt oddly paced and predictable. I'm not as excited for the next duet but the story seems a bit different than the two other duets and so I'll probably try it.
