Over all I’ve spent about 75 hours of my life listening to this series, and I would do it again.
Here at the end, crying and *standing ovation*

I think the plot can be a bit of a mess sometimes as unnecessary side plots are added, but the final hundred pages or so is riveting. That’s largely because of how much Backman gets you to care about these characters and become invested in their lives over the three books.

Backman is such a masterful developer of characters. One would think that with all of the early foreshadowing of what's to come (his signature move in this trilogy), one could adequately prepare one's heart for the utter devastation that is to come. But....nope. The last 30 pages still rip your heart out while simultaneously stitching it back together.
I struggled with a full five star rating because there were story lines that could've been cut (the book is 671 pages) or at least minimized. I found myself trying to get through those fast, so I could get to the characters and stories that I was more invested in. Simply put, it made the middle of the book feel a bit cluttered. That's certainly not a reason to pass this one up though, especially if you want to know how the series ends.

Backman is a literary weaver. He starts with threads you cannot imagine will link up- and yet- soon a tapestry starts to present itself before you.
And its beauty will gut you. And you can see that it’s going to happen- but you just don’t know how or when.
This trilogy is a masterpiece.
I cannot believe I let Beartown sit on my TBR shelf for almost 5 years, but am so glad I finally picked it up.
Winners was perfect.
It will take me a few days to recover from it-and I don’t think there’s higher praise for a book.

Wow. Backman is such a powerful writer, writing with empathy and nuance, but deliberately prophetic as well. He writes mothers and fathers, young adults, teenagers, all with distinct voices and all being people you would like to get to know. This is a continuation of the Beartown saga, with many of the same characters, but all moulded by the past and growing towards their futures. Highly, highly recommend this book and this series.
