A lovely, quick read. I didn't find this book to be as compelling as The Glass Castle or Half Broke Horses, but am still very happy to have read it. My only complaint is the ending seemed abrupt, and I almost wonder if there was pressure from the publisher to finish. At the same time, being an English major makes me think there is more symbolism to the ending than I realize (I even re-read the last few pages, feeling as though I'd "missed" something). So, perhaps after a discussion with other readers, my opinion of the ending would change. If you want an easy summer read, and enjoyed Walls' other books, pick up The Silver Star.

I really enjoyed the story, especially since it was from the POV of spunky and free thinking Bean. She was really great. I do wish there had been a little more fleshing out of other characters, but the story definitely gave you enough to go on. The writing style, straight-forward and honest Bean, and the exploration of complicated themes reminded me of Wall’s other books that I’ve read (The Glass Castle and Half-Broke Horses). Highly recommend this one!

Another fast read, but this book felt like it started off as one book and then morphed into another. I didn't like the somewhat put upon racial relations that never really went anywhere. It never had any resolution or true conflict. It made me wonder why it was included other than to liken the story to To Kill A Mockingbird. That was weak, the strong sister changing from someone who had been accepted and who had fit in at one school to be a pariah at the new school? It didn't read true. I liked the voice of the little girl. The mom never learned nor did she get on medication. It is one thing when writing a memoir, but with fiction, the liberties she could have taken, she didn't.

Going to the law she said "Such a white thing to do. " "What would you do? I wouldn't be getting into no car in the first place. You climb in the back seat with the boss man, you got to expect something's going to happen. That's just the way it is."

I enjoyed this quite a lot, but it had nothing on the Glass Castle, and Half Broke Horses was much better too. Similar homes, though, which the author handles really well.
