"Nyxia Unleashed" was the second book in the Nyxia trilogy, and I was pleasantly surprised with how it held up to the first. I actually liked it better than book 1 in the series.
The events that took place in this book were unpredictable, which made it very fun. However, it wasn't so unpredictable that it seemed unrealistic.
The character development in this book was ON POINT. I loved how the main character began interacting with people from the previous book which he had rivalries with, and even became friends with them. I loved the interactions between characters, the dialogue is also great.
I also loved the alien society in this book, which I was waiting for throughout all of book 1. IT DOES NOT DISAPPOINT.
I am very excited to read the next book in the series!

This book is a gem.
I read the first book in the series maybe three or four years ago, so trying to jump into this one was a little bit like stumbling through the dark, but alas, I was in another country and didn't have the luxury of rereading the first book for a little context about who the hell these characters well, although I'm sure I'll reread it before I read the third book, which is already on my shelf, due to a happy little shipping accident (wow, run on sentence, but whatever).
Nyxia deserves so much love, and the fact that I was still fully invested in this book, even though I didn't remember much about the first, says something.
I don't have a lot to say, except that this book is a blessing, and I love it with my whole heart.

Unpopular opinion alert:
For the most part I really couldn’t get into the book at all. The shoehorned romance from book 1 was stuffed down my throat this whole time. The writing got more and more flamboyant and disconnected the more we went in. The deaths were predictable, and all the build up for side plots were let down in anticlimactic ways that had me groaning.
I really hope book 3 is better than this, please oh please. :/

Emmett and the rest of the Genesis survivors must rally and forge their own path through a new world. Their mission from Babel is simple: extract nyxia, the most valuable material in the universe, and play nice with the indigenous Adamite population.
But Emmett and the others quickly realize they are caught between two powerful forces—Babel and the Adamites—with clashing desires. Babel broke all their promises, none darker or more damaging than the last one, but can they trust the Adamites?
I enjoyed this second installment as much as the previous one, since it keeps all the good stuff from Nyxia, great characters, constant conflict with Babel, intrigues, action, diversity, and what stands out, plot twists that drove me crazy. When I thought I knew what the author was up to, I was surprised by something new, and not always bad for the characters, something that I want to highlight, since the books that pose one tragedy after another, constant hopelessness and fear, like The Knife of Never Letting Go for example, make me unhappy.
The setting changes radically. In the first installment everything takes place in space, everything is new, and Babel had not yet played all their cards, so an aura of mystery surrounds the plot. Now the teams from Genesis 11 and 12 ships are on a hostile planet, with dangerous creatures stalking them while trying to mine nyxia for Babel, while navigating the political currents of the Imago.
Why did I rate this one half a star less? Simply because I would have liked to know more about nyxia, its manipulation, what it is, what are the limits, why some people are capable of performing extraordinary feats, and others can barely achieve basic manipulations? Morning stands out in this regard, to an extreme that may seem suspicious; however, the author lets it pass, so I don't know if she's simply very good, or there's something else there, I hope that in the next (and last) installment this is acknowledged.

I usually hate second books in trilogies. I was staying up late to finish this one. Despite the fact that I read the first one this summer, I had lost track of who a lot of the characters were, and I wish Reintgen would have reminded me just a little harder who was who. I also somehow missed the first description of Imago, and there was never another one. Nothing about their later descriptions said they looked anything other than human except for (not really a spoiler) . But that's a pretty nitpicky detail- especially since it's my fault for skipping over the description in the first place. Another nitpick is the fact that beneath every chapter title is Emmett's name because he's the narrator, but there are only (I believe) three or four chapters not from Emmett's perspective. To be honest, Anton's is the only useful one of those. The other just took away from the surprise at the end.
I thought the pacing was pretty good as were the plot twists. The characters went through some tough stuff but grew because of it. Found family is one of my favorite tropes, and it was put to good use here.
I wanted to rate this four stars at first, but I couldn't point out anything that was actually bad (just a few nitpicky details), and I really did enjoy this.
