The amount of letters being sent back and forth, often describing things we've already seen, started dragging a bit. But! When these books are good they are GOOD!

Always love an outlander book. This book didn't feel so prominent as the others and the first half felt like a filler book. Trying to find a new direction after the definitive end of the last one. But she draws such interesting twists in stories and as always it's always interesting to follow Jamie Fraser and Claire in their next adventures. I had also come to love Brianna and Roger's povs in the last book and felt this one held less focus on them. But I enjoyed reading about their domestic life and little dramas . The cliff ending of theirs in this book is torture! I must get my hands on the next one.

I really didn't know what to expect from this book because I knew that this was the book in the series where the person who recommended the series to me stopped reading. At first I could see why. There are different threads to the story in this book, unlike the previous instalments in the series; that of Jamie and Claire (and Ian, though sometimes he has his own threads), Brianna and Roger, William, and Lord John Grey. At first, I wasn't really into that after so many books being focused on Jamie and Claire, but the more I read, the more interested I became in the other threads. I loved the sections with Brianna and Roger, after their return to the present day, and seeing how Jemmy, Amanda and the rest of the family adapted to the drastic changes around them. I've always liked Lord John and the more I read about him, the more I started to like him. I didn't settle so well with the sections about William at first, because he is a relatively new character that we don't really know much about, but the more I got to know him, the more I found myself liking him. And Jamie and Claire - well, I will love them forever :)
I also liked that there was a lot more plot in this book compared to some of the others. Yes, there were some sections, especially in part five where I wished Diana would hurry up (and this will happen at some point in any of the books, considering they are SO long!) but I found myself so interested in where the book was going, hence I read it faster than any of the others so far (though that may have something to do with the fact that I am not at uni anymore and could devote myself to reading!) and by the end, I loved how the perspective would shift - just when you reach a climax with one character, you'd be moved on to another, before they all conjoin at the end (well, apart from Brianna and Roger!) I actually thought, once I got used to the different structure of this book compared to the others, it was one of my favourite of the series so far. Looking at the reviews though, i think i may be alone with this. Oh well! Onwards to the next!

IT’S FINALLY OVER. Entertaining but slow. A succinct review for a not-so-succinct book.
