Immensely talented writer. Loved this book, and "Alligator" as well.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Mary Lewis. This is a beautiful story about love, family and loss. Based on the actual event of the Ocean Ranger capsizing off the coast of Newfoundland. Lisa Moore brings a light to the ever sad event.

While I enjoyed the narration of the story, the writing format was not a favourite as its one where the timeline jumps back and forth between timelines.

Definitely not one of my normal reads but being Canadian myself, this was a pleasant read and I even learned some more history šŸ˜‹

Probably the most depressing book I've read in a long time. I'd have to read the other Canada Reads Nominees to determine for myself if this one was worthy of the win, but after a first read, I'm not overly impressed. The writing is at times akin to stream-of-consiousness and there were more metaphors crammed into those two-hundred-odd pages than most books of similar or greater length. Nonetheless, it was not an unpleasant read and at least their were a few rays of hope stirred in among the continuous grief and suffering of the characters. I think this book taught me two things: 1. never work on an oil rig and 2. middle-age sucks.

I never really got into this book. I never felt the emotions. Maybe I should have read about the loss of the rig before starting the book?

2019 is the year I finish books on my ā€œon-holdā€ shelf.

I started this audiobook about 6 months ago but my library hold ran out before I could finish it. Despite the pause, the imagery still felt fresh in my mind - always the sign of a great author. I will admit I had forgotten chunks of the story itself so that made it tough to jump back in. I suspect thatā€™s due in large part to the audiobook format where I do occasionally tune out so itā€™s much harder to come back to something after a long pause. This is a story that jumps around with timelines quite a lot and I find those the toughest for audiobooks so while I do recommend this book, I donā€™t recommend it as an audiobook.

Loved the overall sadness of the book, hated the writing style with burning passion.
The lack of quotation marks got on my nerves where quickly when I started not understanding if the character was talking to someone, to themselves or just thinking about something. I understand the reason for it, but unfortunately it was not my cup of tea.
