I adore Didion's writing, and some of these sentences are breathtaking. I understand this is simply a book of notes on two articles that were never completed. While her observations of travel in the south hold acuity, her tone is sometimes deprecating in circumstances that do not warrant, and yet, she remains more objective in questionable scenes.

South and West written by Joan Didion was my introduction to the works of Didion and I don't think it was a particulary good idea on my part. The book in itself is just a collection of little snippets that Didion wrote why on her journey through the South of the US with her husband, John Gregory Dunne, in June 1970, through Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. I listened to this on audio book and realized that I not only am not really a fan of audio books and would have rather read it with my own eyes but also that as a reader, not from the US, I had a hard time following along with their journey.
I still want to pick up more from Joan Didion as I am intrigued to find out what more she has to offer.

Reads like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Laura Ingalls Wilder, in a way.
