“The greatest adventure lies, not in running away, but in looking inside.”
I am requesting from the library so many children's books that I never read as a child but seem to come up often in conversation with other readers and are referenced frequently in pop culture. This one is certainly part of the zeitgeist. As an art history grad, I love the idea that these kids would hide out in the Met and try to solve a mystery about a sculpture, how glamourous! Lovely light reading for a rainy day.

Had to read this for a challenge on my group, otherwise I would have dropped and burned this book without finishing it.
Dear Lord, this book is bad. The illustrations and the writing clearly show their age. Especially the drawings, urgh. At times I had a hard time seeing anything in it.
The book is kind of written from the POV of an old hag (yes, that she is), but throughout the whole book the children feel as more main characters than the old hag. Which causes big confusion and it felt weird reading when we suddenly met with the old hag and she was talking in I-form. I said, I did, I walked. While all the while I was used to the kids and that POV. So big minus stars for that.
The story is absolutely boring and pretentious. Claudia is a terrible kid. Always chiding her little brother, always thinking she was so much better. I just got tired of her attitude and wished she would just appreciate her brother. She walked away because, OH OH OH BOO HOO her parents and brothers didn't appreciate her little self, and she wanted to see if they would miss her. *rolls eyes*Of course they would you stupid piece of whatever. Seriously. They might not always show it but your parents love you.
Her brother was also pretty annoying, but not as much as his sister.
Then the old hag. Number 2 on the most disliked characters in this book. Pretentious, annoying and a true old hag, I didn't like her at all. Playing games with the kids, not ever telling them the whole truth. Bleh.
The only reason I was interested in this book was the whole museum and hiding there part. Sadly I felt disappointed in that as well. It wasn't that exciting and lacked serious details or fun adventures.
All in all, no no and no thank you to this book. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, unless you are looking for a boring, pretentious and lame book.

This book was exactly as I remembered it when I read it as a child. 5 stars for the memories and 5 stars because it really took me out of my reading funk.
