This book is awful. The writing is bizarre. The characters are cardboard cutouts. The main character is so, so annoying. The plot is stale. The romance is terrible (odd for someone known for romance). The dialogue was utterly ridiculous and redundant.

This is the first book I've read by Nora Roberts and I have absolutely no interest in reading anything by her again.

This book needed an editor. It seems like a classic case of a famous name being attached to it and it being published just because of the famous name. If this book had been sent to a publisher without Roberts name on it, it would have been laughed at and put in the rejection pile.

Sorry, that was harsh. I wanted to DNF this book so bad but stuck it through. I wanted to give it a fair shake but it was a slough.

Don't read it.

Pausing for physical book. Not a fan of the audio.

My wife is a HUGE Nora Roberts fan, and had been pestering me for quite a while to give her favorite author a shot. In my mind Nora Roberts had always equalled romance novels, and those really aren't my jam. That said, when I saw The Awakening I thought: "A fantasy story set in Ireland? Sounds cool." My ancestors came from Ireland and it looked to be inspired in part by Irish folklore, so it got my curiosity going enough to give in and give it a read. I'm glad I did because it was very enjoyable the whole way through. Breen was an easy character for me to relate to, and the rest of the characters were each entertaining in their own ways. Nora Roberts definitely has a way with description and dialogue (even packing some snark in when needed, which is a win with me). The story, though a bit slowly paced, always kept me engaged. I can see why my wife enjoys her work so much, and will be keeping an eye out for book 2 when it comes out.

The book was too slow for me. There was a lot of detail and great world building but the plot just was going no where. I try to read as much as possible but I was losing interest. Normally reading is fun and exciting for me, but this story felt like a chore and I wasn’t enjoying reading.
