I've been reading three or four series of the same sort. Technologically advanced group of soldiers get stranded on primitive world. There is Safehold series by the same author, Destroyer men, and some Harry Turtledove series I gave up on. This one is not the worst of the lot.
Weber and Ringo try to make all the right moves in this book; Have character development as in the main character prince Roger Ramius Sergei Chiang MacClintock's development from snotty dandy to military leader. Have a plot with a clear and meaningfull goal. And theme's. Unfortunately Ringo seemed to be in charge of the themes, and you get empire of sadistic environmentalist's as an adversary. (if you have read Try rising series you know what I'm talking about). The character development consist of few stern talking's to and bonk on the head...
It's shit. I don't know why I'm writing this review, it's shit. And this book isn't worth three stars. Maybe two, but only because the authors can string sentences together.

Another book picked from the oldest unheard books in my Audible collection, I liked it enough to download additional volumes. For some reason I already had 1 and 4. These are military sci-fi, with futuristic soldiers and a spoiled princeling forced to adapt to primitive weapons when they are shipwrecked on a hostile planet. I liked the characters and the world development. Only in book 4, “We Few,” did I have to skip chunks because the battle coverage got too boring.

Weber is a master of world creation. However, I felt like I was riding through the jungle in real time. I was amazed that a space adventure could be so slow at times. Some of the conversations must be planned for seeds for the next book because they really went nowhere. Although long and dragging, you never really got to know any of the characters enough to worry about them. I think I would have like a bit more cleverness and using what they know to out think the foes than was done. I liked that Roger has begun to man up, but ugh. He was so annoying at the beginning. I might read the next book if I don't have any other books to read. Not my favorite.

It's a good book, there's no doubt about it.
However, I should probably have done some more research before diving into it. I was more or less expecting that they would get off the planet and the adventures of Roger would develop from there but now I understand that most of the book series continues on this underdeveloped planet.
That makes it really not my cup of tea. Well, I usually begin what I've started so I'll probably finish this series as well but probably not straight away. I need to get my fix of actual space action first before another one in this series.

Grab your popcorn for this read.
March Upcountry could have some potential as a fun pulp sci-fi book. However, I think its major flaw is that this first in a series did not have enough of a substantial plot arc or character development to justify ending where it did. I understand it's a serial, but really I have no desire to continue reading it. The only way I would continue would be if I was really bored with everything I was reading and it was sitting there very convenient to grab.
As it is, March Upcountry is a mediocre read that can be fun at times.
