I often didn't like the secondary characters' personalities and I definitely didn't always like the protagonist, but I very much liked how they wove into and through each other. The author did a lovely thing here with some very flawed men and women.

Really interesting and unique book for me. The author managed to capture the atmosphere so great! There is actually quite a lot happening and there were many surprising moments. It made me think a lot about the fundaments of human being.

Le récit d’un épisode de vie, aussi réaliste que bouleversant

Qu'est-ce que je me suis ennuyée...
Je vais tenter sa saga Wallander parce qu'avec celui-là, c'était une sacrée déception.

Slow and sumptuous!
Terrific writing. Good unexpected plot turns. Unique characters coupled with Sweden’s harsh winter landscape.

A tale of redemption, which comes from unexpected origins. Fredrik Welin has banished himself so thoroughly that he needs a dip in the frozen ocean to verify his existence every day. Then one day, an old woman with a walker appears in his yard and everything changes. Detailed descriptions and poignant real life situations run throughout this novel by Mankell.

This book reminded me a lot of [b:Out Stealing Horses|398323|Out Stealing Horses|Per Petterson|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1174428093s/398323.jpg|3321103]. A bit more happens in this one, but a lot of wonderful writing about nature and looking back on one's life. Great writing that can be savored. I can see why this Swedish writer is so popular and look forward to reading more of his books.

Couldn't finish this. It seemed to go without making a point.

This is not one of Mankell's mysteries. It probably has limited appeal but I liked it - or perhaps "liked it" isn't the right way to put it; rather, it was a compelling book to read.

The main character is over 65 - this adds something as far as I'm concerned. Old(er) people can also have a life, so to speak.
