The traumatized teen’s bible.

I feel like it’s hard to dislike Holden if you either were a kid like him or have known kids like him. He’s deeply empathetic, deeply intelligent, deeply good with people, deeply frustrating, and deeply frustrated all in one. He is an extremely realistic portrayal of a kid who has been failed by his society, but he loves the society all the same. I can understand how this could make people uncomfortable or put off, but your tenth grade english teacher wasn’t just trying to torture you, I promise 😂

This book is about childhood trauma, grief and the struggle to preserve innocence in a cruel world.

I felt sad after reading it. If I had read this book as a teen I would have been able to relate to Holden, but I don't think the message I would have taken away would have been the same. I think to truly appreciate this book you have to be able to afford Holden your empathy as a reader.

I read this book because 'its a classic', though I'm not sure how. I'm not kidding. Holden seems to have a terrible superiority complex that made it difficult to want to keep reading. It really did. I know part of it is supposed to be a depiction of mental illness, but instead I felt it just made him incredibly unlikeable as a character. He spends the entire book complaining about hating phony people, when hes the worst of them all.

I do not understand all the hate that this novel gets. Yes, a lot of the novel is Holden complaining about his life but he's not wrong most of the time. He is trying to figure himself out and what being a person means to him and honestly that usually involves a lot of figuring out what you hate. Overall, I wish it was a little longer and we got to see or learn more about certain scenes. For example, he keeps talking about calling Sally but never does. I wish we got more on their relationship. I also am not a fan of stories that just end, although it wasn't as frustrating since Holden does go through character development it was a bit of a letdown that there isn't a solid ending in my opinion.

Although Holden’s personality can be quite challenging to get ahold of, his story is filled with unique perspectives and emotional insights that leave you  compassionate to him and empathetic towards his struggle.

Loved this. I feel like Holden has a lot of feelings but he’s also a shitty kid who’s trying to be cool so it’s really quite funny. A really interesting character. Particularly love
his relationship with Phoebe, you can see he cares about her so much and it’s heartening to read
. The book certainly is a product of its time with some of the language used in it however.
