This was a wonderful final addition to the first book 'Shanghai Girls' I read several years ago. I loved the plot, the characters, the continuation of their lives... it was detailed and towards the end I had a hard time putting it down. I definitely recommend these two books by Lisa See.
I just finished Dreams of Joy, the sequel to Shanghai Girls, both wonderful, well-written novels about Chinese American women. Lisa See has written the story of two resilient sisters and their loved ones. The easy to read detail has given me insight into Chinese culture, history and politics. The emotional content has helped heal me today of my own sorrow in a way that a good book does. This writer makes me want to read more of Amy Tan who influenced her. I highly recommend this book.

whoag. was on the edge of my seat for the last quarter of the book. see never ceases to amaze me with her storytelling.
a slow beginning, but gathered momentum halfway through and the last third i was hooked. in some ways, it was less the story and more about learning about village life, and wondering if that's anything what my father went through as a child.

I enjoyed this one more than the first Shanghai Girls book! Not sure if it was because it was set in China and showed more of the history side of things there, but I was really interested to see what would happen next.
I love her descriptions of China, and her portrayal of China under the Great Leap Forward is so disturbing--a story which should be told more. But for some reason, this book didn't resonate with me as much as the others because it seemed a little more unrealistic and because she tried too hard to tie it all up into a happy ending.
Still, I would give it 3.5 stars. An enjoyable read.
