Beautiful prose, thought-provoking, timely. I can see why this book has received so much praise, though it’s not a favorite for me. The spanning of generations is expertly done and I really appreciated that the author didn't moralize, but rather let the characters be themselves, flawed as they were. But the book started very slow and never really found a sense of urgency. And I always felt like I was kept at a distance from the characters--like I was inches away from *truly* knowing them (though that might have been intentional).

had no clue where the story would go (positive), and I loved seeing all the different perspectives, I only felt like the ending was a bit abrupt but otherwise great read

I found this book to be so interesting and thought-provoking. Brit Bennett does such a good job of giving nuanced perspectives on race, colorism, gender, motherhood, and violence. It was a deep character study on so many different characters, and I found myself rooting for all of them. It's a tragic story, but I could empathize with almost all the decisions the characters made.
The villain of the story is so clearly all the systems of oppression in America. I really admire Brit Bennett's writing for being able to convey so many beliefs and ideas in such detail without it feeling like an info dump or a lecture. The story is slow and subtle, which helped me think on my own.
This was a good audiobook as well.

Stella is such an intersting character to me. When she tells Desiree that becoming white was freeing, it felt so ironic considering how her life was so restricted by lies. I could also understand her desperation to leave Mallard after experience such abuse.Spoiler

It was 5 stars at the beginning, but somehow I convinced myself that the sisters would meet in the middle of the book, and that didn't happened, and it makes me frustrated somehow...
