I'd ideally like to give this three and a half, because I'm a bit torn with the end half of the book. I'm not sure what changes I would've made if I were the one who wrote it though, so on the whole I'm satisfied with it. I liked getting more insight into Haytham's character, although I thought it was pretty clear who he was in the game's storyline. I liked getting to know just how exactly he became so disillusioned though. This was my first time reading one of the books from the Assassin's Creed book series. Oliver Bowden does a good job of capturing the spirit of the games I think! It'll be fun to try another of the series when I feel like it. Maybe I'll give the first book in the series another go (I tried to start that one once and was put off by the prologue, which felt a bit forced).

Overall, I'd recommend this to someone who has already played Assassin's Creed III, but even not having played the game the book stands on it's own fairly well. There isn't too much here to alienate readers that know little of the game's universe.

"I realize now that it will take time, that the road ahead is long and shrouded in darkness. It is a road which will not always take me where I wish to go - and I doubt I will live to see it end. But I will travel down it nonetheless."

I love the Kenway saga so much. Unfortunately learning about Haytham's childhood for half of the book brought me to near tears of boredom as I realized I could be making more progress in IT by Stephen King instead.

The only big part I loved was the part where the game's time period takes place in. I love the father/son conflicting relationship, it was done SO well. Also, I did enjoy learning about what happened to Edward Kenway (aka my precious cinnamon roll) after the events of Black Flag, learn more about Jenny, as well as Reginald Birch.

most of this novel was not covered in the game which is why I was excited about it. I enjoyed it very much; the diversity of characters, varied locations which the novel took place like England, Italy, France, Damascus, Boston and others, the style of it.

the thing I liked the most and found very creative in this novel- in contrast to the previous ones- the style of it which was narration of a diary. It was close to real diary in which there were some small entries and long eventful ones as well. also, it was realistic the entries were not always on day to day basis.

since I read the secret crusade it was full of Assassins point of view, so since I knew the narrator this time was a Templar I expected to read about their point of view which was always idealistic and crude, yet this novel didn't go there at all. In the last few chapters there were some hints to it by Haytham to Conner yet I haven't managed how the character that we saw grow over the novel would have come to such ideals and conclusions?

another thing that I found very weird and unnatural was the Father-son interaction both in the game and novel. I expected more hate and anger, yet it was replaced by overall lukewarm feelings. I was happy in the chapter that Haytham saved his son and how he was conflicted about it later, and the chapters they were together.
over all it was a sad tale. but in the end it felt realistic considering the facts about the war and what happened to the natives after.

I loved that book since the first pages. I can't say it was something brilliant but it kept my mind occupied and at a whole - I found it interesting.

A must-read in you have time and nothing to read. In other cases too. The subject is appealing and easy to understand.
