This book was... something else than I had expected. I used to wonder why the author got arrested and persecuted for publishing this. Well, I don't anymore. It's satirical to the point of absurdity and sometimes confusing.

I can see it serving the purpose of criticizing the whole society (from the aristocracy and church to the tribes of South America), but it also delivers it with unexpected brutality, which I didn't enjoy much. It proved its point though - our world is terrible and evil, and work is the only thing that can take our mind off of that.

czytało się miło, po połowie robi się trochę nudne, przewidywalne i powtarzalne.

“I also know,” said Candide, “that we must cultivate our garden.”

Philosophers loved to be like “ive spent all this time thinking and it has led me to develop a comprehensive view of the world and humanity’s place within it. Also one time a jewish guy wronged me so anti-semitism is in fact a core tenet of the human experience as they are genetically predisposed to evil.”

This is intimidating...

Favorite passage so far that seems most applicable to the theme: "I have been a hundred times on the point of killing myself, but sitll was fond of life. This ridiculous weakness is perhaps one of our worst insticts. What can be more absurd than choosing ot carry a burden that one really wants to throw to the ground? To detest, and yet to strive to preserve our existence? To caress the serpent that devours us, and hug him close to our bosoms till he has gnawed our hearts?"

My favorite part of this short read was when the tragic characters are finally together again and find that they're bored and disatisfied with life. The horrific events that unfolded in their journey was a more accurate portrayal of life. Unfortunate circumstances, death, disaster, and amongst those, Candide focuses on the little glimpses of happiness and hope that surface along the way. What's life without a little action and a goal?

Overall fun book, the philosophy is easy to follow even now. Found it a little hard to track at times but probably just because it’s old.
