Love the art, love the darkness of it, hate the homophobia and transphobia surrounding the characterization of the Joker.

Héle mooie visuals, maar een beetje een warrig verhaal.

Creepy.

radical artwork, and genuinely creepy. Far more psychological than it is action-packed.

The best part is the art, it's surreal and fantastical in an incredible way, the artist is amazing. The story idk what happened or what's going on, I'm more confused now that I finished than i was when I started lmao
Giving 3 stars for the art, the story I'd give a 2

Reread. Perhaps one of the darkest Batman stories I have ever read. Took such an interesting, morbidly dark take on characters that are often viewed as goofy and laughable by most. Highly recommended, but not for those easily disturbed.

The first graphic novel I ever read. What an amazing introduction, plus illustrations by the incredible Dave McKean.

This is the very definition of trying too hard. The art is ugly and bizarre, the panels are too hard to read and every second this graphic novel is screaming to the reader, "BE DISTURBED!" It's hard to be disturbed by the uglyness of the asylum when the entire story is ugly. It is so overwhelming as to take away the effect of any of it. If it was meant to be campy and enjoyably over the top that would be different, but going into this expecting something serious and getting psuedo-psychology and over the top weirdness ruined this for me. It was an awful experience and a stomach churning one (and there is a difference between being deeply affected physically and emotionally by a work of art and having a crummy story and un-creative art make you nauseous.)
