I loved the h/h and their romance was very believable and sweet, so that was awesome. But I felt like the novel wanted historical detail and atmosphere, and the plot seemed kind of haphazard.

This made me feel so much.
I absolutely loved the romance in this book : the chemistry between the characters and the banter were too good!

Historical romance with characters that are POC. Trying to find diversity in romance is harder than it should be. This book’s characters are spies for the Union in the war. A premise I haven’t read before. I enjoyed it and will read more of the series.

Wow. This is one of those books that will stay with me for a while. Absolutely amazing! I'm not much of a historical reader, but this book had such a unique premise that I bought without even reading the sample pages, and I could not put it down. Alyssa Cole has a new fan in me!

Women spies of the Civil War

Elle Burns is a spy for the Union in the Civil War. She is willing to leave her life in Massachusetts to go undercover and pretend to be a mute slave in the South, and to use her perfect memory to capture and transmit information as a Pinkerton detective. Malcolm McCall is also a Pinkerton detective pretending to be a Confederate soldier. This is a romance that doesn't sweep away injustice and anger, and confronts the difficulty of forming a relationship with someone who has much more privilege in the world, and also the necessity of sacrifice for a greater cause.

Weird note: the cover of this trade paperback has a very satisfying texture to it.

“She was Ellen Burns, and she was going to help destroy the Confederacy.”

I came into the book not knowing what to expect but I knew with all the raving reviews, I might have a little expectation of it.
I was not disappointed at all.
I love reading historical fiction but I have yet to read a lot of historical fiction set in America.

This was a amazing read!
It had all the elements of romance, suspense, war plotline and more.
The plotline was straight into it, no beating around the bush and the pace of the book was in such a high adrenaline you couldn't stop reading.

Our characters are very badass. I enjoyed that the main focus was just the main characters and not much side character.
Especially our Elle, she is such a badass.
Not a damsel in distress and having Malcolm to "protect" her.
The character development is so good!
I love reading their banter and of course their romance. It was an instant romance.

The narrative is very real, raw and honest.
Like in the end, it wasn't all happily ever after so easily like how the plotline states Malcolm mom and sister's attitude towards Elle.
I can't wait to see where the series will go.

“I fight for the Union because America is supposed to be a land where people can be free from tyranny, where families aren’t ripped apart to make a profit, where men aren’t whipped for speaking their mind and women aren’t abused worse than brood mares.”
