But why is Mrs. Peters taking sole responsibility for feeding the seven children? Mr. Peters keeps getting her pregnant, but all he seems to do is play with the kids and collect a few apples.
He stressed out a bit with the first child, but then just let his wife get more and more stressed. It's not like he sits around doing nothing: we see him planting a tree, bringing in groceries, and reading stories to the kids, but he's never helping in the kitchen until the very last page, where he's doing dishes with Peter.
I can look past the kids only eating one thing each because it's a children's book, but I can't look past dad never cooking, also because it's a children's book.

This is probably my favorite story in rhyme. The rhyme scheme and rhythm are perfectly done, and the story it tells is hilarious! A mother dotes on her children so much that she makes them each a homemade version of their favorite food...every day. Eventually, she starts to really resent it - with seven kids and seven meals to prepare daily, no wonder!
Will she ever get a moment's rest? This ties up in a fun way that suits everyone in the family and the reader, too! Marla Frazee's detailed watercolor illustrations complement the tale perfectly.

A coworker gave me this book as a recommendation. The book is entertaining as it goes through its rhyming formula and gives us a surprising twist at the end that I didn't see coming. However, the majority of this book just had me going, "What horrible brat children." I'm not very sympathetic to picky eaters--you eat what's on your plate unless you're allergic and it's going to kill you. I can't understand why the parents didn't ever draw the line. It's cute overall, but a bit problematic for me.
For: picky eaters; parents who can sympathize.
Possible red flags: whiney/demanding children throughout.
