a notable first effort, but not a good read. This is where her other ideas come from. Unfortunately it is also the origin of the sentence, "There was a fondness in his voice that she might have found flattering if he were not standing next to a sack full of heads he had cut off."

A brief but fun story with a bit of nice banter, some interesting characters and a solid plot.

Read it because I didn't want to read a long story as I'm waiting for some books of the "Mercy Thompson" series to be lent to me. This one seemed short enough and it actually wasn't bad even if the characters aren't that developed. But the story was interesting, with a bit of steampunk, not that much, but better done than other novel lenght books like [b:Steamed|6484914|Steamed|Katie MacAlister|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1247731770s/6484914.jpg|6676256]. I might get the following book.

This was a short, entertaining introduction into the Flash Gold chronicles. It was also the first of Lindsay's steampunk stories that I've read, having come mostly from her science fiction titles, and a few of the fantasy ones as well.

Like all her books, the action and the characterization is great. The story moves along at a brisk pace and you find yourself wrapped up in the characters' predicament right away. The fact that this is a novella-length piece also serves as a great intro because it gives the reader a bite-sized look at what can be expected in the series.

For me personally, I'm not sure I'm invested enough to keep reading in the series as steampunk isn't anywhere near my first choice of genre, but I did enjoy the opportunity to try something new and Lindsay has proved, once again, that she's a very talented writer in whatever genre she attempts.

Even though this story is relatively short, the author made me care about the characters very early on. The story was just the right size to give me enough information so that I felt like I got a whole story's worth, but short enough to keep it exciting until the very end. My only suggestion would be for a couple more transitions between events. I'm already reading the next story in the series. I hope this becomes an on-going series!

While I did like the Canadian-Steampunk setting, and the dynamic between Kali and Cedar, there was something missing from Flash Gold. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there was something lacking. It was alright. Held my attention well enough, but I'm not so compelled that I'm itching to read the second book, either.

The one major negative about this is that it is too short. There is a good amount of story told within these few pages, and I long to get a longer version of this, with a bit more detail in the mix. Being a novelette, each of the pieces is here and bite sized, I just felt like I had a kid's meal when I needed the adult menu. The story is fast paced, and has characters that I would like to get to know better. Good effort on this one.

I enjoyed this. It was such a quick read at 50 pages, just enough to introduce the characters and peak your interest in both them and the plot possibilities. The author notes at the end that she is trying to gauge interest with this short, and to please comment on her website if you would like to read more about the characters and this plot. Initially Kali makes me think of Firefly's Kaylee, however, I could see her evolving beyond this as the author grows her character. The flash gold concept is interesting, it would be great to see Kali learn more about it, her father, and how her father invented it. Her involvement with Cedar could be good too if happens on a subtle, natural level. I'd hate to see it turn into a formula romance.

I really, really wanted to like this book. It had all the right elements. The location was amazing. The premise was perfect. The cast of characters? Wonderful.

But what I take away from the book is yet another damsel in semi-distress. Yes, she was able to take care of herself, but the EverLooming ManFigure was just simply too required.
