Idk... I'm thinking I'll give this one a 2.5 stars when I review it. It really has little to do with the actual storyline... I just personally was not a fan of the concept of the book.

Review coming soon!

More of a 2 and half.

I read this while working a 7 hour day and not starting it before I got in. Though the content could have been interesting, the emphasis on "I use curse words while my dad is a super God nut" kind of ruined it for me. There were a lot of characters that just seemed to flat, scenery and general plot development wasn't displayed enough, and I can't express how much it irks me when authors use one word throughout a work to describe things like they've just discovered the word.

Spoiler That being said I enjoyed the plot twist of her father being abused in the house. It gave the story more depth and let me feel creeped out rather than forcing scary on me in an over bearing way like the rest of the book.

The story was slow and drawn out. The epilogue was atrocious.

I can't say enough about this book. I have read MANY horror/mystery/thriller books but this book ACTUALLY SCARED ME. I just loved how everything played, the events in the story happened slowly and steadily making it suspenseful and wanting you to read more. In most horror stories everything starts happening suddenly, but Nic Sheff's writing is beautiful and all parts of this mystery clicked together beautifully and smoothly. I really don't want to say anything else because I want you to get the full experience that I had. If you love horror/mysteries/thrillers I really suggest you give this a try.

TRIGGER WARNINGS-

Death, suicide, addiction, sexual assault, drinking, religious abuse, abuse

This book is about a girl, Jen, who moves with her uber religious father to an old house that's been converted into a hotel. They're living there for the winter after the death of her alcoholic mother trying to start over. The house is kind of haunted and creepy and disturbing; there's a lot of weird and odd things going on with the house. It's kind of slightly confusing in a way because there's not like a decent plot, there's a hole in the plot I feel, like there's something missing from it,  somethings not fully there. It seems like it's just an outline and that there's really no meat to the story. The characters are kind of one dimensional and there are a few characters that are brought in or just mentioned in order to tie other characters together, they're there for no real apparent reason. There's some stuff that's left for you to assume as it's not really explained in full, like the deal with Colin. I found the ending to be kind of abrupt and it just ends and there's like no explanation, no real conclusion or tie up of lose ends nothing, it's kind of happily tied up and finished.

Wasn't great, although there were one or two parts that could have made it better. Full review on my blog, Lisa Loves Literature, later this week.

Read this book if you want a watered down version of The Haunting of Hill House. Weird rip-off/combo of THOHH and the Shining. Quick read but nothing special.
