I’d give this book a million stars if I could. I know this is only one perspective of many, but this novel ja very eye opening and the things that are happening today just ain’t right.

This is a very impactful, and reading it for the second time for a class only cemented that. It its very well written, and there are many great lines in this book. In the back of the collector's edition, there is an explanation of the names and the characters and of Garden Heights the was very interesting and nice to know.

Nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said and better, so just... holy shit wow, cannot overstate how much this needs to be read. Wow.

(Also i said this in a status update but I’m just in love with all the tiny character details that make everything so freaking real and how Angie Thomas says so much with small things, like... it’s a seriously rich and effective writing style that’s like. Masterful with the... economy? I’m sick and can’t Word today. It’s really good and she makes deep character stuff look easy with tiny details and it ISN’T. Lol. It’s great.)

I had been meaning to read this book for a while. I'm sorry I waited so long. It was an emotional, intelligent and comprehensive look at the life of the main character, Starr and the complexities that lie behind the relationships of modern families, friends, communities, institutions of power/control and racial groups - all of which are further complicated by the police killing of a Black boy and the lack of institutional accountability that follows. Excellent story-telling with a smooth delivery, yet also very substantive messaging. I highly recommend.

Extremely powerful book. I usually don’t read YA, but this is truly a great book across genres.

It‘s finally over 😩

Alr, for a YA book, it‘s very good, but YA is just really not my thing. So, I didn’t particularly like it.

I read this one in German for school. The translation was well done but it didn’t escape that awkwardness a fictional text almost always gets when translated into German, which made the writing considerably worse. Some dialogue was almost painful.
Etwas das mir negativ aufgefallen ist, is that Angie often  wrote sentences in this style:
(Very short sentence/ word)? (Usually ironic answer)
Which I found cheesy

I already read this in 5th grade, but had forgotten most of the plot, so that wasn’t a problem.

Sad ending with all the names, RIP to the victims

An absolutely outstanding book. A must-read for everyone. This book shares some hard truths about the state of the world today, but there are also beautiful moments of brightness and understanding. READ IT.

This is one of the best books I've read in a while!
It's emotional, thought provoking and relevant. It's written so well! From the beginning Starr had me rooting for her and her cause. In places the story broke my heart and made me so angry but there are such tender moments between family members.
This book is well worth the read
