This was sad to read but also so, so riveting. Short, too! (Under 300 pages)
Easy read, a cousin to Gary Paulsen's Hatchet. I loved Groff's Matrix, but didn't think The Vaster Wilds approached the same level as far as the beauty of the language I saw in Matrix.

An expansive novel about nature, god, and existence in some of the most expressive prose I’ve ever read. If you enjoyed Richard Powers’ Overstory, you’ll probably like this one too.
As with stories about surviving in the wilderness, this one can be a bit repetitive. Not sure what else can be done about that. I mean, if you’d avoid getting your toes wet in a running stream or if you care little about the trees, there’s not much here that’ll interest you, I’m afraid.

I have never read anything quite like this. It is a poignant story about discovering the difference between survival and living, and having the fortitude to live/die on your own terms within circumstances completely out of your control. I couldn’t help but grieve alongside the main character as she mourned the lives she would never get to experience. It is beautiful, terrifying, and heart wrenching.

Like Matrix, this book is probably more interesting to talk about and think about than to actually read.
One of the more beautiful & wrenching books I have read. It was both hard to read yet I could not set it down. I highly recommend!
I love Lauren Groff but this book just didn't speak to me. It's beautifully written as expected from Groff but, for some reason, I just didn't find it that interesting. Definitely could just be me because it has gotten a lot of great reviews.
3.75/5 ⭐️ “To be alone and surviving is not the same as being alive, she understood.”
