first reaction is I don’t know how to rate this yet

I think this would’ve been more pertinent to me if i subscribed to or felt more pressure from societal norms (reflecting on how lucky i am that my family is pretty non traditional). this is truly a grotesque rejection of those norms, pushing the limits on what we think is okay into territory that is… icky and quite odd…
I /did/ like it in some way, but at the same time i’m a sensitive person and have a difficult time finding the point in nonsensical things. i might have to think on this a bit more but for now: i’m unsure!

A book that achieves what is intended.

This book is about childhood trauma and escapism, and I would recommend going in blind. It starts off realistic and then becomes increasingly fucked up. It didn't disturb me as much as some stories in Life Ceremony (perhaps I've become a bit desensitized?) but it was still a wild ride. Sayaka Murata's writing is good, as always. The book itself is very short and I read almost all of it in one day. However, it didn't leave that much of an impression.

I would give it three stars, it's good for what it is.

This is a horror book on trauma and you can’t convince me otherwise.

I'm not going to lie, rating this book is... difficult. I have two wolves inside of me.

* The first wolf recognizes this book is, in its genre and in its way, a little work of heart. The rpose is linear and simple, but it's able to make you fully feel the disgust and rage of some of the stuff that's happening. It succeeds in its objective: making you question reality and bringing you along on a descent toward madness

* The other wolf, sadly, wasn't looking for something like this. This was a good book per se, but it's not for the weak of stomach and must be read when you're ready for it. I was looking for something light, I was "deceived" by the description and went for this... It really was not the right time for me.
Also, most importantly, THIS NEEDS CONTENT WARNING. HUGE CONTENT WARNING. It's more than ok to tackle some topics, but the reader must be prepared for it. I wasn't.

All in all, the first wolf says 4 stars, the second 1. It'd average at 3, but I'm leaving one less for the lack of warning.
