the writing was good but I honestly just didn't like it. I think there's a level of how much sense a book needs to make for me to enjoy it, and I'm all for books that are weird and odd, but this was lacking the why too much. I get the idea of what was causing everything, but I truly just don't get why anything was happening or why it mattered that it even was. It just left too much unsaid I think

Well, this definitely is what it says on the tin: a fever dream. I read this in one day, and it’s got to be best enjoyed this way. I did struggle hard at first with the initial conversation’s lack of dialogue tags and quote marks, but after a while I stopped stressing over it.
I did have to go find an explanation of what the fuck I had just read immediately after finishing. The plot itself was less important than the anxiety and building terror that it was able to bring out in me. It very effectively did that without a doubt, but I feel a little stupid for still thinking something supernatural might be at the source of it by 70%. However, that explanation I googled quickly brought all my puzzle pieces together into a clear picture and I felt a little dumb. But that’s kind of the point isn’t it?
Edit: Horse girl note: As I was returning this on Libby, I saw the horse on the cover and remembered: why did the stallion that jumped the paddock gate have reins on??!! Carol mentions grabbing them when she catches him at the river. Or did my sleep deprived brain miss something?

I have literally no idea what happened in this book and not a single question was answered, but it was so fun and eerie and unique and I had a really good time reading it. Confused af but entertained and thoroughly creeped out.

does what it says on the tin, that’s for sure. I really enjoyed how the disorienting format puts the reader in Amanda’s headspace. I thought it was interesting how the author built up tension and fear in the beginning of the story, but once the reader gets more information, it becomes less scary and more sad. lots to say about the effects of pollution in the environment and how companies purposefully hurt poorer communities because it makes them money and they can get away with it . very thought provoking.
This book feels like tripping on acid directly after reading silent spring
