An interesting book on the way of using swords in battle, largely a book of philosophical importance.

This is the one book I would bring to a deserted island, if needed. I have been studying Miyamoto Musashi since the early 80s and find his life and character amazing. I first read this book in a swedish translation made in the 70s and this english one is very good. If you like Japaneese history or sword technique, even if you study philosophy this one is a great addition to your library. I really like it. Thanks to #Netgalley and #AmberBooks for letting me read this updated version.
I struggled a bit with "The Book of Five Rings." I kept feeling like there was some deeper meaning or lesson I was missing, especially when I saw all the five star reviews for it here. I personally did not get a lot out of it, and found that I enjoyed the addition of "The Book of Family Traditions on the Art of War" by Yagyu Munenori to be more helpful.
I actually have done video reviews for both "The Book of Five Rings" and "The Book of Family Traditions on the Art of War" to better voice my thoughts.

Well written and very useful. A helpful read for many audiences. Definitely took some notes to go back to for reflection. As noted the concepts require repetition.

I read this on a whim after hearing about it on a podcast. It's an incredibly short book (it's actually a collection of five books written by Musashi - hence the name "a book of five rings"). Like "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu, it's viewed today as a guide to combat and warfare that can be applied to the business world and life in general.
So on the surface, it's a lot of "hold your sword strong and cut your opponent with the intent of cutting him", but beneath this there's philosophy, ethics, and a lot of Zen Buddhism teachings.
