An incredibly good fantasy novel.

There was a danger of it reusing a joke from Terry Pratchett's Monstrous Regiment but it steered clear at the last moment (which saved it losing a star).

The best proper fantasy book since Game of Thrones.

Took a while but really picked up at the end. Kind of a cross between Sharpe's Rifles and Promise of Blood. Recommended.

It is rare to find adult fantasy that incorporates queer characters, let alone protagonists, without reducing them to their sexuality. To find a series that not only doesn't do this, but is also beautifully written and the most engaging fantasy I've read in years, is remarkable. Also, as someone who often skips the battle scenes in books, it is a testament to Wexler's phenomenal writing and the extremely human characters he creates that I read 600+ pages of military fantasy in almost one sitting.

A few twists. A few tense moments. Solid book. Will read more in series.

What a crazy reading experience! I started this book not wanting to like it, I didn't like the cover, I thought Django Wexler was a badly made up pseudonym and my goodreads friends' reviews were all over the place. Turns out Django is his middle name based on a stage name made up by a jazz musician, all of my goodreads friends were right (more on that later) and the cover....well, call it merely average.

I did get sucked into the story and characters right away, Winter and Janus are very cool, Marcus takes some getting used to but Fitz is great. Then I got seriously bored by the battles and sort of skimmed through the middle, I think that decision made the rest of the book better. I got re-engaged once the
Spoiler super human, demon, Foer brother guy tried to assassinate Janus
Turns out my friends who like the characters were dead on, and my friends who found the battle scenes tiresome were also quite correct.

It was kind of an odd blend of flintlock fantasy and arabian nights. I think McClellan does it much better but this was better than I expected. The loose ends and YouKneeK and Sabrina's positive ratings might help me pick up the next book but it might have to go on sale.

Not bad, I think many will enjoy it but if I could recommend only one flintlock fantasy it would be Promise of Blood by McClellan

Honestly, I just dont get how this has run and run and run

i couldn't finish it

Sorry Gjango - i wanted to like it

For me the most memorable scene is where Winter and her battalion are holding the query, awaiting the colonel. This book definitely ignited my passion Flintlock Fantasy. I forgot how the book ended, so it was still interesting to read.
I found it difficult to immerse myself as the details of the characters and the world were fairly sparse.
