I'm really glad I stuck with this, because the last 20% of the book made the slow pacing so important for the reveal. It was really interesting (especially with both lead characters!), and I will read the sequels, but I'm definitely taking some time off in between books for this series because it's so dense. In a completely good way.

That was AMAZING.

Everything in it was great : characters, plot, atmosphere, dialogues, verisimilitude... One minor drawback was that I felt like the plot dragged a bit in the middle, but that might just be because a workweek-from-hell prevented me from giving it the attention it deserved. I still order book two around 40% of the book, and that tells you everything.
After the amazing Powder Mage and City of Stairs trilogies, my opinion leans even more firmly in the direction of flintlock-fantasy-is-the-future.

Big, big bonus points for having no less than four major female characters in a military fantasy setting without shoehorning any of them (pun intended), quality bi/lesbian representation and, I think, the only nonsexual depiction of a naked woman I've ever read in a fantasy book.

Even more gold stars for Janus Vhalnich, who reminded me of a weird mix of Sherlock Holmes, Thomas Shelby and George Smiley in the best and most captivating ways.

Added cookies points for Django Wexler's name : is that just a pseudonym ? Is it reality ? I don't care, but I dig it.

Thank you for everything.

Five sun-faded-blue, gunpowder smoke and glittering heavy-bronze stars.

I actually DNF'd this one at about 60% (maybe more) not because it was bad. It wasn't. I thought I was enjoying it. But once I put it down that was it. I just wasn't feeling it enough to pick it back up at the time. I've heard the ending is really good so one day I may pick it back up and finish.

This was an amazing military fantasy. I appreciated how much research and time went into this book to actually make it feel like military fantasy. I loved how you actually got to see the military aspect up close and the attention to detail in particular battle scenes where you actually felt like you were part of this military campaign. The first part of the book was a little on the slow side but it did give you a lot of information to make the story a little more understandable while setting up the major plot for the rest of the series. The last 50+ pages were awesome and I am really looking forward to continuing on with this series.

Loved it! So glad the next installment is coming out in just a few months. This book felt like it combined the very best elements of Cornwell, Kipling, Conan Doyle, and Tolkien. It was a ripping good read, full of the comfortingly familiar all gussied up in a brand new dress. If you like stories of regiments and muskets, an engaging story, likeable characters, stirring battles, and the odd fantasy element then this is the read for you! Django Wexler is now on my "must read immediately when next book comes" list.

A very interesting presentation of a magic that hardly anyone still exists. The buildup to the use of it was very well done. Good characterizations, interesting world-building, intriguing plot, with lots of characters to care about.

This book was good! I had a few problems with it, mostly with the fight scenes and how many there were, but overall I really loved the characters and the time period. I'm giving it a 4/5 stars and will be picking up the next books for sure!!!

My first by Django Wexler and it won't be my last,

An Epic war fantasy with wonderful characters (read as: "strong women") and a writer who knows his business.

The story involves a troop of soldiers banished to the mediocre land of Vordanai, where their only job is protecting a puppet prince on the throne.
Until the populace rebels. Enter a new colonel, with ideas no one can understand, two soldiers, one an officer the other a mere ranker. As things get shaken up, the story builds, and we meet other characters who leave  a great impression on the reader. At times it is difficult to take a side and stick with it.  The ending and cliff-hanger ensure I will read the 2nd book in the series, sooner rather than later.

This would have been a 5 star read for me, had the author taken a break from battle during the first section of the book. it literally (pun intended) wore me down to the point of exhaustion. However, a  great beginning to what I hope will become a favorite series.
