Great fun, awesome battles, just the right amount of magic. It made me want to read and study real history, which is a result I always love from good books.
I don't think I need to read the next books in the series, though.
3 1/2 stars.

I liked the story and all but it was very heavy on the military theme and processes that at many points while I was reading I kinda zoned out as it didn't keep my interest that much. Good book and well written otherwise!

For me more 3.5 than 4. Well created world. Definitely a flintlock, military fantasy. Very good in that respect. The women weren’t terrible. Winter felt real. Marcus was a little too idealistic, but it goes. Janus felt like a male Mary Sue. However, if this is your genre then this was a good rendition. It’s just not mine.

Strangely enough, I really liked the characters, but couldn't have cared less about the story and action. Much more military than I prefer and not enough fantasy. Don't plan to read the rest of the series.

I had been avoiding reading this series because so many reviews focus on the military battles; I am happy to day that these are not the focus of the story, and the battles that are included are much more character-focused than typical top-down battle literature. The story is good, and the universe is interesting, and following a colonial invading force reinstating a clearly ineffectual leader definitely makes you question who the "bad guys" really are.

This book is a military fantasy novel as told from two main pov. One a military man and one a woman masquerading as a man in the same army. The beginning got a little bogged down with world building and adding pov from other random people. But other than that I really enjoyed this story and the ending was so good.

Not bad but not amazing. I liked the first half then I took a break for 2 days and came back to it and found it such a bore. We have a sapphic lead who is pretty chill and I was happy with the newfound “strength” she got at the end. Finally, maybe she can kick ass now. The male lead Marcus was all right, kinda bland and too soft at times. Janus was interesting if not enigmatic. Military and wars and action were entertaining enough and the writing was good. Overall, hesitant to pick up the second book considering the fact that I was so fucking bored reading this towards the end that it soured my experience with the entire book.
