I hesitated to read this b/c of how disappointed I was with the twillight series. After gentle nudging from a friend, I finally caved and bought it. Surpirse! It's a winner; much better than the sappy, glittery, faggy vamps. I don't normally like love stories, but it had enough of a sci-fi edge to keep me interested.
This was a little strange and a little hard to get into. But after months, I finally finished it.
I just finished reading The Host for the second time. I chose it this month for my library science fiction/fantasy book club. Although I read, enjoyed and understood the appeal of The Twilight books, I don't think they are great books. Too cliched and predictable.
The Host, however, is very entertaining, and it surprised me more than once. I enjoyed it even more the second time. It made me ponder the conflicted nature of humans, and the aliens are complex as well. The characters are interesting and the plot unpredictable. The story pulled me in. I'm sorry to hear that there will two sequels; I really think it functions well as a stand-alone novel. But I'm sure I will read them if they are published!

Great book! This is a unique perspective of the human consciousness written in a way that definitely makes you think about things in a different way. I truly enjoyed it, and I would recommend it to those I know.
This book was far too long. I can't believe no editors recommended to the author cutting off/shortening the first 25% of the book and the last 15% of the book. The middle section of the book was interesting and held my attention, but it was a real struggle to keep reading at the beginning and towards the end of the book. I wouldn't recommend this book. I just wish the author was able to get to the point a bit faster, and not draw the story out once we got to what was really happening.
Characters weren't as intriguing as those in the Twilight series, but the story was more creative.
I have to say, when I first started my expetations were not very high because of Twilight and all that. But The Host actually turned out to be better, way better. There was the love story, of course, but this was way deeper. I loved Wanda, but at times she would get really spineless and it would irk me and I would be talking or yelling at her. (Yes, I yell at fictional characters) I cried toward the ending, but by the time I was finished I was grinning. It was a really good book, and I think it redeemed Stephenie Meyer in my eyes.
Thought this was a good sci fi/romance. "love dialogue" was not too bad (what I don't like about romance books.) Thought this was very original. Kept me reading!
