Back to the formula, alpine sports in lieu of the usual snorkelling or casino games is a good meat. Tracy returning to a little of the idea of Vesper, and the ending works well. Not sure I needed the chapter of just listing out bioagents.

This is my favourite Bond film, and so far the only Bond book I read. The film stands out in its difference to the rest of the franchise, but since I haven't yet read others I don't know it the book is.
The Bond character portrays quite differently to any of the Bonds in the film. Much more calculated. I guess Casino Royal's Craig would be the closest to how I picture him in book.
While the film is too stripped from most gadgets and Q has no part at all, in the book Bond is really quite the MacGyver, not like in any of the Bond films. He's much less smooth and cool than Sean Connery and Roger Moore, but also Lazenby and Dalton. Anyone would be cooler than Brosnan!
Surprisingly I loved film Tracy more than book Tracy, but Diana Rigg is gorgeous! But at the same time I think the relationship between them, perhaps for obvious reasons, was much stronger and better in the book than in the film. I adored them as a couple, which made the ending and the fact that I knew it all the more upsetting.
Fabulous read I loved it!

It is strange how mediocre is this book considering how much I love the film. It improves when it is read as part of the sequence, but a it's not the best Bond book. It even gets dull in some places. The film is a lot more romantic and emotional than the book. Tracy of the book simply doesn't match Tracy of the film, but then Diana Rigg is unique and wonderful. Tracy's death is the only thing that is almost as effective as in the film, but the love story is simply not very believable. Still, as part of the series it works better than as a stand alone book, which is uncommon for Bond books that usually work independently as well as a link in a chain.

One of the best Bond books and easily the best Bond film (challenged only by Goldfinger, The Living Daylights, and Casino Royale). Terrific light reading for an extended weekend breakfast. Yes, as espionage novels go Fleming is no le Carre, but who is? And the styles are so different anyway...
This is part of the 'Blofeld Trilogy,' but you can just pick it up and flip through it to recover from more intellectual reading. It's nice that it's not too empty, either; Fleming has a certain style and pace that makes these seem vital in a way most thrillers just aren't.

Definitely one of the better Bond books. Quite a bit of sipping of the drink here, he is clearly enjoying himself. IT was also very interesting to see the influence the newly released "Dr. No" film had on Ian Fleming and the impact that comes across in the book. Unfortunate we couldn't see him explore this new direction a bit more.
I really enjoyed it, and right now I would place it second to Moonraker. A personal favourite of the series and overall reading.
