I expected to connect with this story like in the book Room, but for whatever reason, I just didn't. It's a horrific story and yet, a story of survival of the children.

I found this a quite riveting read. The story of Lex, who grows up in a house and family of extreme neglect and abuse and eventually becomes the girl who escapes. This we know from the beginning of the book, effectively turning the classic thriller structure on its head as we already know the outcome. This works quite well as Dean gradually reveals the extent of what went on in the house saving a final twist for the last chapters of the book.
I’m not a big fan of ‘the big twist’ at the end as a trope, as I find that authors often rely too much on the twist as the thing the plot hinges on. Although the twist is probably not that much of surprise here, it still kind of works as a reflection of the heroine’s mental state and as a consequence of deep rooted trauma.
A very entertaining read – if you can say that about a book with such a harrowing topic!

I’m not sure if the seven chapters were intentional for each of the seven siblings, but regardless, those chapters were waaayyyyy too long. I also didn’t like that it randomly jumped back and forth between the past and the present, I think dividing those up into their own chapters would’ve been beneficial.
Overall, I thought the storyline was good, but it was just a sad and depressing story. Even the good “happy” parts still seemed sad to me.

Lex was the girl that saved them and got them out. Now they are all grown up and have gone their separate ways, and Lex is responsible for trying to bring them back together to do something good with their childhood home and site of horrendous abuse.
I found the timeline and some of the writing to be a bit confusing and extremely vague. The story is dark and just doesn’t ever really make the darkness totally worthwhile. It all just felt too surface level and left me feeling unsettled. Something was just not right.
