Really well done alternating POVs, each character had a unique voice, interests and what mattered to them in the story. I read this one quite slowly because there was always that looming feeling of dread ahead even when something magical and beautiful was happening in the plot. I feel like I learned some things about Hawai'i and modern Hawaiian culture. Some really beautiful language in here.

Un libro splendido, una storia di spiriti, di amore, di incomunicabilità e il racconto dell'invasione del territorio hawaiano, della colonizzazione americana, così efficace perché non diretto, ma tenuto sullo sfondo delle altre vicende, delle storie individuali. È una storia che spezza davvero il cuore, quella della famiglia Flores, costretta a vivere in povertà, in una casa putrescente, e a spaccarsi la schiena nei vari posti di lavoro solo per avere qualcosa da mangiare. La famiglia Flores è piena d'amore fino a scoppiare, un amore puro e incommensurabile, ma inafferrabile: Malia e i suoi figli si amano, ma sono incapaci di dimostrarlo, per questo si generano incomprensioni che continuano a crescere fino ad arrivare ad inghiottirli. Quello che ho amato di questo libro è anche il fatto che a volte queste incomprensioni non si risolvono, ma mettono radici.
La prosa è lirica ed eterea a tratti e a tratti confusa, sconnessa, frammentaria, proprio come i pensieri e le personalità dei protagonisti, specialmente quelli di Dean e Kaui, così uguali e così diversi, legatissimi, anche dalla comune delusione per l'attenzione non dedicatagli dai genitori, ma purtroppo distanti.
A tutti i personaggi sono affidati dei capitoli, ognuno di loro ha una voce che racconta e ogni voce si differenzia dall'altra; all'inizio di ogni capitolo è indicato il narratore, ma sono tutti talmente ben caratterizzati che non ce ne sarebbe bisogno per capire chi sta parlando.
Il linguaggio è ricchissimo, talmente vivo da commuovere.
I personaggi non sono amabili, sono difettati, rotti, sconfitti e pieni di una rabbia talmente forte che io come lettrice ho sentito a tal punto da avere la necessità di fermarmi, a tratti, e prendermi una pausa; sono, però, personaggi veri, con cui si ride e si piange e con cui ci si infuria e ci si chiede continuamente "perché?". Vorrei parlare di mille altre cose presenti in questo libro, della comunione, o addirittura fusione, dell'uomo con la natura, o del fatto che il romanzo è contemporaneamente dramma familiare e romanzo di formazione con tocchi di realismo magico, con Kaui alla scoperta delle proprie capacità e della propria sessualità e Dean e Noa che come lei cercano di ritagliarsi un posto nel mondo; potrei parlare del fatto che questa è una delle pochissime volte in cui ho incontrato una donna scritta da un uomo che è vera, che è plausibile, che non mi fa venir voglia di strapparmi i capelli dalla testa uno ad uno, o del fatto che ho appreso aspetti interessantissimi della cifra hawaiana e sui danni profondi causati, ancora una volta, dagli americani, ma non trovo le parole giuste per raccontare tutto ciò che vorrei.
Aggiungo solo che è un libro che mi ha emozionato e che ha davvero lasciato il segno.
Leggetelo, anche perché è un romanzo unico.

I'm not a big fan of magical realism so I was leery of this book. The characters and story line won me over and I was sorry to come to the end of the book.

"If a god is a thing that has absolute power over us, then in this world there are many. There are gods that we choose and gods that we can't avoid; there are gods that we pray to and gods that prey on us; there are dreams that become gods and pasts that become gods and nightmares that do, as well.
As a native Hawaiian who spent the first third of her life living on Oahu, this story feels very authentic to me, both in the way the characters speak (there is a little bit of Pidgin English to read through, but it is not very dominant) to the struggles they face, especially on the mainland. Although there is a bit of mysticism (some might say magical realism), it is in every way true to Hawaiians' connection they feel with the land and their culture. This story gave me a chance to contemplate the struggles Hawaiians face today as well as reminded me of the early part of my life and the roots of my Hawaiian ohana (family).
The prose is beautiful, descriptive and illustrative. Told through the different perspectives from every member of the Flores family, this story provides a full, rich and personal perspective of a family's journey, development and growth. It makes the reader contemplate so much: the impact of colonialism to a culture, what we're doing to our land, the broken American dream, the simplified idea of relying on a singular savior to make big changes, poverty and race.
For those wanting to learn more about the real Hawaii and its people beyond Waikiki and what is glamorized in pop culture, you should pick up this book.
