Loved this memoir, it had a really strong voice and was funny in the midst of describing a vast amount of poverty and hardship.

Books like these are why I hate rating memoirs and don’t share memoir ratings beyond GoodReads.

It is not my place to judge the validity of the way Patricia Williams tells her life story. I found it so incredibly heartbreaking that it was often difficult to read/listen. But sadly, it’s her reality.

What kept me from loving this is that I went in expecting Ms. Pat’s typical style of taking hard-to-imagine situations and spinning them to be funny. Even typing that it sounds awful, but it’s her style. So when I dove into this one, I was expecting to laugh.

Reader, I did not laugh once. And not because she tried to be funny and wasn’t. But because she spoke her truth, and her truth was an absolutely unbelievable upbringing that she astonishingly found a way to overcome to get to where she is today. But I felt we sped past the part where she overcame and rose up. It was one short chapter.

I think I just read this at a time where I needed something light and this didn’t fit the bill. But I still recommend it as a perspective read, for sure.

I downloaded the audiobook version because the cute little black girl on the cover reminded me of some of my old pictures. I never heard of Ms. Pat but I am so glad that I do now. Listening to the story of her life (read by her) was profound. She went through some mess but I loved that she and Jeannine chose to tell her story based on the angels that helped her along the way. When I finished I was amazed that she has come through all of that but still has laughter and a huge heart. I do wonder if she's been able to reconnect with some of her angels and what happened to some of the other people (ie did Butterfly's mom ever find her?). Such a great book and hopefully I can see her on stage one day.

Wow, Ms. Pat is a force of nature! What she went through as a teenage mom and the fact that she listened to the "angels" that were in her life to guide her at different times is testament to her self awareness and ability to learn and grow. If you've never seen her stand-up, do some searches and watch them. She can laugh now about what she went through, but there are messages in her humor that everyone can relate to.

Here I am, having breakfast at a Starbucks in the middle of the mall sobbing my eyes out listening to the last chapter

It's really hard to get me to cry, but family relationships and hardships especially if it involves kids is my weakness

Ms. Pat's journey is tough and I respect her for fighting and finding the light in laughter in life after all she has been through

Now excuse me while I go binge her podcast ✌

This woman is amazing. Rabbit did what she had to survive, and amazingly ended up thriving. Just read the book.
