"Don't fuck with me, inspector. And don't fuck with him. Try it and I'll find a way to have you booted back to London."

Now THIS is what I expected from the 50th book in the series but better late than never. This one had it all.

→ Roarke's history rearing its ugly head for revenge
→ A dangerous villain that held more substance than your usual In Death murderer
→ Cute moments between Roarke / Eve as they both attempted to protect each other
→ Eve's people rallying around and treating Roarke like one of their own
→ Eve defending her man (honestly, I'm fine. I didn't tear up or fist pump. Definitely not.)

All the mention of children has me curious... is Roarke changing his mind? Adoption down the line seems a hell of a lot more likely than a pregnant Eve.

Time to impatiently wait until February for the next one.

Long time Nora Roberts fan here, pretty sure I have read everything she has ever written except this book. Only 5 pgs in but I'd swear the author is not NR or NR has changed her style extremely drastically. Will update as I go. Just realized, as this series is set in the future, neither Roark or Eve have even been born yet in 2021. So I have now finished and as the book went on, it sounded more like NR's voice but it really does have the feel of a ghost writer just writing in NR style. Slightly different then others in the series as we knew the perp from the get go. Still a solid book.

92% read via audiobook and the last 8% read in a physical copy since the audiobook returned before I could finish it (whoops!). I do love Hoopla though and the convenience of borrowing audiobooks (and graphic novels) from it!! So much love for library-based e-loan apps.

This was a pretty good story. What am I saying, of course it was, I haven’t met a book by JD Robb that I haven’t enjoyed. The narrator for this one was intense so this is NOT a good audiobook to listen to if you want to relax, as she amped up the tension vocally when the plot called for it. Very well-narrated though as a whole. Just not calming to listen to as at times she would raise her voice (again, when the plot called for it).

4* is generous, it's more a 3.5 for me. The in-death books have a number of ways to happen; 1) We know the killer and the chase is on 2)the killer is unknown but from Eve's perspective primarily 3) the killer is unknown but is told with a strong aspect of killer's perpsective, 4) a mix of 2 & 3. This is one where we know up front the killer and it's the chase to catch style. This for me wasn't the strongest instalment of the series. I missed seeing more the supporting crew, who were namechecked (eg Mavis) or were very much in a back seat (eg Peabody, relatively speaking). Understandable as it was about Roarke with his history being the driving force of this story. Still an auto-read but not quite the compulsion of other, stronger tales.

Sigh ... I love when Roarke's past is involved. Their relationship just gets stronger with each book.

Eve's current case brings an unwelcome blast from Roarke's past into their world. While the super real, and dangerous threat hangs over Roarke and those he loves ... the lack of "punch" of the threat sort of rang hollow for me. What I loved about earlier books is the life threatening, beat the hell up scenes that have been missing in later books.

Sure, there are situations that are tense. It just seems like Eve has reached Wonder Woman status, and Roarke has constructed a super secure bubble around her. I just had trouble feeling the "threat" to her throughout the book.

I LOVE how her entire squad came together to bring the perp down. There are some pretty amazing scenes with that. Feeney and Whitney's involvement in the case was interesting.

The interspersed School opening scenes were sweet, and was a nice break from the action.

As with all In Death books, this was another great installment. I loved how all the gang got to be there. Must read if you are doing the series. I always enjoy when we get to read more from Roarke's POV

The In Death books are possibly some of my favorite books ever.

I enjoy the books, and at 51 books, I feel like Ms Roberts has managed to keep it fresh and going. I love Eve and Roarke and their relationship.

I can’t wait for the next one!
