It was a privilege to get an advance readers edition of this book and, though I didn’t end up reading it ahead of its publication date, I am so glad I read it now. Too many of my friends are military wives these days, and I have a much more profound sense of what that means. This book and life during this war informed each other. I am not a miluim wife, and there is a tremendous amount of privilege in that fact. It was heartbreaking and important for me to read about some of Simone’s internal processing and, especially, about the way the wives held each other up.

As a left-leaning military spouse, I’ve never related to any book more. A truly accurate, intimate look behind the curtain of the complexities of this life.

I really liked this book until the last chapter when she started to bring politics into it and implying that people are unrelatable or people she doesn’t want to be around if you vote differently. Lost 1/2 a star for this

As a military spouse I related to this authors story but also was so frustrated by her outlook on both life and military life. I didn’t really dislike her story because it make me reflect and remember, however it did take a lot to look past her opinions. At times I feel as if she felt she was being kind and open hearted but many times politics were inserted in places where they had no place: such as a going away party.
I would love to hear what the wives written about in this book would have to say. I feel a part of me was being harshly judged in this book. I wonder if they feel the same way. Thinking of “the wives” in my life, after everything we have shared I cannot imagine depicting them in a tone I felt I was reading. Was that lost in translation? Are my views colored by the season of life I am in? Or do they feel like I do?

I had high hopes for this memoir, but simply put, it was boring. I was definitely the intended demographic as it was clearly written for those of us who identify as liberal and have concerns over the military, but it just didn't deliver. The book was one long complaint and by the end, I honestly disliked the author so much. She was self- consumed and irritating. Some of the insight into military practices was interesting, but nothing really happened in the book. There was no plot, and her life did not make for a good memoir.
