Such an interesting, unique, and inspiring extension of Monáe’s music. Not typically a sci fi reader but this was really accessible and many of the stories left me thinking.

I definitely felt like I had to power through this one. Some of the more sci-fi aspects felt a little forced for the sake of the plot lines. I did really enjoy reading a story that was heavy on the queer aspects and the Afrofuturism. I think this would’ve worked a lot better as a full length novel with less characters because the world building was really interesting and creative.
A generally well written collection with some great late-story punches and world-building.
3.5/5.
Picked this up because I’m a huge fan of Monáe and her exquisite talent and impressive display of imagination.
I’m not generally drawn to SciFi, so it took me a bit of time to get into these stories, but once I caught on to the general overlapping theme tying these stories together, I was intrigued.
Timebox absolutely hooked me. And I couldn’t put the book down from there. I would agree this collaborative collection of stories is compelling and worth a read. Some were not my favorite, but the ones I enjoyed genuinely left me eager to read more.

I listened to the audio book - while it was sometimes hard to keep up with the plot, I let the world wash over me and it was so refreshing, so calming, despite its dystopia. It sets the album in a new light, and is beautifully queer.

Most times I found it difficult to get through the book. There was so much over explaining or trying too hard to make the worlds feel dystopian and futuristic; everything just felt forced.
Gosh I loved this book! I am still obsessed with the Dirty Computer album and it was so great to explore the depths of this afrofutruistic world that Monae has created. I liked that it was a series of short stories and that each ended before the story came to a close. As much as I would read more of each story it was more thought provoking to not let the stores come to a complete close.

This interconnected anthology based off of an album is mind-blowing. Some of the stories resonated with my soul and life experiences and others left me lost and confused. All in all a great anthology that’s thought provoking, relevant, and necessary.
