Jake's Review: Everybody in my house loves Scaredy Squirrel and me and Scaredy have a lot in common that is why I love him so much. He actually is scared of WAY more things than me which makes me feel better. I like this one a lot because he is at the beach which is a place I like to go too. I really like the illustrations in this one because they are silly and funny. It is really easy to read -- I even think the midget might be able to recognize some words and he is really slow (Mom's Note: nice sibling love there people). I ask mom to buy these for me even though they are way below my reading level. I think I will try reading this to Jesse tonight, I think he will like the pictures. Plus maybe than Mom will let me play with her scaredy squirrel puppet -- she says she bought it for me but I really don't believe her.

Jake's Rating: 10/10

Mom's Review: Yes I must confess I bought the Scaredy puppet for myself, but I let the kids play with it so that makes me a good mom. This is another wonderful Scaredy Squirrel story with my favorite high maintenance rodent. Adults and children will both enjoy another day in the life of this adorable, quirky squirrel as he learns to live with his issues. The artwork is adorable with plenty to look at and something new to discover everytime. The storyline is sweet, honest and extremely helpful to kids who have some unusual issues (It helped Jake learn to laugh at his issues and find ways to work through them). This is one I highly recommend to parents of kids who have anxiety issues as these issues are dealt with in a sensitive yet funny way. I wish I could articulate how wonderful these books are. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this -- not to mention all the rest of the series -- you will THANK me.

Mom's Rating: 10/10

Scaredy Squirrel just keeps getting better and better. This time he goes to the beach where there are people! Very scary for a squirrel who doesn't like anything or anyone coming in contact with him.

A cute beach adventure that tackles the fear of crowds in the usual silly but educational way.

Two very enthusiastic thumbs up for Scaredy's Beachwear! (And for another fantastic Scaredy Squirrel adventure.) I especially loved:

+ Scaredy's passport,
+ Mission: Operation Seashell,
+ Scaredy's activities at the beach,
and
+ his very own crowd.

I'm not sure but I think this may be my favorite Scaredy Squirrel book. Love the trek to the beach and what he learns.

Scaredy returns in his third book that follows the same wonderful theme as the first two. Though Scaredy would love to go to the beach there are so many wrong crowds that he could be surrounded by that he doesn't think it's wise. So Scaredy creates a beach of his own using an inflatable pool and kitty litter. But something is missing - the sounds are all wrong. So Scaredy sets off to find a seashell at the beach to put to his ear. He plans carefully but somehow doesn't factor in one little detail - people.

Watt's art is as always very fresh and fun. The quirks of Scaredy's logic and thoughts are again thoroughly entertaining. I love the touches of oven mitts, his middle name, and the care he puts into anything he does. Very funny, unique and above all child-friendly.

Highly recommended where the first two were popular. But if you don't have the first two, make sure you get those as well. The cover art will get the books moving off of your shelves and the stories will keep them coming back for more. Recommended for ages 5-7.

Melanie Watt, Scaredy Squirrel at the Beach (Kids Can Press, 2008)

Watt's third Scaredy Squirrel book is as cute as the first two, though she's really kind of stretching the agoraphobia thing a bit here (is Scaredy, despite his careful planning, really going to have the guts to get all the way from his tree to the beach without having a nervous breakdown?). That said, the second half of the book tells me that Watt has had an ulterior motive all the way through this series, and that it's going to surface in the next book or two. Can't wait to see if I'm right. And as always, the story is simple and amusing and the illustrations are bright and easy to grasp; kids will get a kick out of these, and they have the re-readability factor that assures parents won't get tired of them when the kid asks for you to read it just one more time before being packed off to bed. *** ½
