Love that ends was still love.

According to my spreadsheet ~stats~, I read mostly YA Contemporary. Who knew? & apparently, after reading so many YA Contemporaries, ya girl caught onto the formula of these novels. While reading Brief Chronicles of Another Stupid Heartbreak — I found myself quickly guessing where the conflict would arise, who’s gonna be upset with who & who will fall in love. However, even with the predictability, there was something special about Brief Chronicles of Another Stupid Heartbreak.

In Brief Chronicles of Another Stupid Heartbreak, we get an outsider’s perspective of a couple in love. Lu, a love columnist for Misnomer, is on a mission — to interview couples during the summer before they go their separate ways for college; will they try long-distance or call it quits before the going gets rough? Lu finds herself obsessed with storybook-esque couple Iris & Cal, and is determined to interview them & hopefully break out of her writer’s block.

While hanging out with this couple, Lu finds herself dealing with her own heartbreak. You see, Lu & her boyfriend broke up due to their own after high-school plans; this break-up leading her to pick up this project in the first place. Adi Alsaid writes a heartbreak that’s so relatable to anyone who’s no longer with their first love (or any love, for that matter).

& one of my favorite concepts in Brief Chronicles of Another Stupid Heartbreak is this development of Lu’s character as she battles & grows from her own heartbreak. Love can end. It’s a matter of life & it’s something we all most likely will suffer from at some point — unless somehow you sold your soul to the devil & he offered to give you that one love that lasts a lifetime.

We’re not one of those couples that assumes first love is last love.

Another portion of this read that I enjoyed was her blossoming friendship with this couple, Iris & Cal. Lu learns a lot from her new friends when it comes to love & heartbreak. Throughout the book, Lu spends quality time with Iris & Cal, both together & separately. I truly enjoyed this friendship, however, her obsession with hanging out with them does cause issues in other aspects of her life. I don’t think Lu is the best person when it comes to it; but, again, ~character development~.

I also loved the setting of Brief Chronicles of Another Stupid Heartbreak. Being a writer in New York City used to be the dream for me. Unfortunately, as I got older I started to fear muggings & violence & much prefer the calmness outside of a big city. I loved living vicariously through Lu!

Brief Chronicles of Another Stupid Heartbreak is a fast & fun read. I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys YA Contemporary!

Note: Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for sending me a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I... have really weird feelings about this book. I never hated or disliked it. It's just that I never loved it either. It felt like every YA contemporary trope wrapped up into one book with some unique twists here and there to throw you off the scent.

I hated Lu. She was annoying, irresponsible, and kind of... obsessive? I really don't know how I would explain her, but I think that this book could've easily taken a different route and been a thriller with the way that Lu obsessed over Cal and Iris. I'm getting total Lifetime Movie vibes just thinking of the screenplay this could be turned into.

The other characters were fine. I liked Iris and I love Pete. He was the only one that seemed to have any common damn sense in the entire book. He didn't hold back and gave Lu tough love, though she ignored it while simultaneously living inside her own pity and selfishness that caused her to disregard anything going on around her if it did not involve Iris, Cal, or Leo. Can you tell that I hate her?

Anyways.. the story was fine. I don't know how else to describe it. It's probably the kind of fluffiness you want to read on vacation or when you're newly in love or something. I will say that it builds pretty slow, but it's not boring. If you're into teenage fluffy love stories, I'd say read it.

I wish I could say that I loved this book. The first couple of chapters showed such promise. But in the end I was let down by the main character Lu, who was honestly the most unlikeable character I've ever read from.

Lu is a writer for an online magazine, where she specializes on the thoughts of love. But when she gets her heartbroken by her boyfriend, she develops writer's block to the point where her editor must give her an ultimatum. Produce a column or you're fired. Out of pure luck or chance, Lu discovers a couple that are facing the same troubles her ex and herself faced. She becomes obsessed with this couple convinced that they're story is the only thing that will save her job and her future writing career.

Oh Lu. She is tactless, selfish, unreliable and a pain to read about. I detested her character. She begins to ignore her family and best friend. Obsesses over two love birds that she doesn't know and even develops a crush on the boy who is her muse for her story. Newsflash he already has a girlfriend! Girl, you are not a smart cookie by any means.

What upsets me the most about this book is that I loved the idea of it! I wanted to love it so much but the main character and her horrible personality made this book hard to pick up. I've been putting off finishing this story for weeks because I didn't want to read from Lu's perspective anymore. She drove me crazy.

I've never written a book by Adi Alsaid before, and this story showed such promise I wish it could have followed through. I will however, still pick up some of his other works because apart from hating the main character, I thought the story idea was genius. And I would like to see what other stories the author has created.

I am giving this book 2 stars simply for the fact that I could not get over how much I disliked the main character. Take her out of this books equation and this would have probably been a marvellous story.

I honestly had mixed feelings about this book. I didn’t care for Lu or her desire to write about Iris and Cal. For some reason though I still wanted to see what happened. Definitely not my favorite of Adi Alsaid’s but I’ll still read whatever he writes next.
