Important message, but a bit too text-heavy for most kids. The repetition wore on me and the story felt a tad heavy-handed.
Sometimes you need a helping hand, whether that means help to the top of a climbing wall or help feeding your family. This is a great story for kids to learn compassion and awareness of so many out there who have less then they do.
Very touching but not for story time! Good book to teach empathy to kids.
This was super cute! Food scarcity is the main topic but also being a good friend. I really liked that Sophia tried to keep Maddi’s secret and help her on her own at first but when she can’t help Maddi on her own anymore she tells her mom with zero deliberation. The book doesn’t make having little/no money for food an “issue” it’s just a stated fact of Maddi’s life. What makes this book shine is how smartly written the book is and how the illustrations and the words work together to tell the story rather than one helping the other. I highly recommend this book for all classrooms.
When Sofia discovers the vast differences between her well-stocked family fridge and her friend's Maddi's near-empty fridge, she's determined to help. Though she's promised Maddi she won't tell about the empty fridge, Sofia does what she can to fix the problem, stocking her backpack with fish and eggs. She soon learns that, while fish and eggs are good for kids, they are not good for backpacks. After a bit of trial and error and a realization that Maddi is more important than Sofia's promise not to tell, Sofia confesses Maddi's hunger to her mother. Together, Sofia and her family are able to help Maddi. MADDI'S FRIDGE is a touching story about friendship, promises, and asking for help that deftly addresses the issue of child hunger.
With all the students that go hungry, much like Maddi does in this book, it is nice to have an author write a story about it. I appreciated his ability to create a story that had hungry as an issue, but it was not the moral of the story. I think this is a great read for children of all ages, it is important for them to know what is going on in the world around them.
MY HEART!
A beautifully done book that raises awareness about childhood hunger... It's more prevalent than we realize.
It's definitely inspired me to donate some food to a local food bank. ♥

Beautifully written with both compassion and some humor, this story explores the issue of childhood hunger in a way that even young children can understand and relate to. Through the lens of Maddi and Sofia's friendship, the author touches on themes of friendship, loyalty, and caring. Will definitely be reading this with my second grade class as we get ready for our annual canned food drive.
Although the illustrations of these girls are a bit cartoon-ish, this book is not silly in that way. Maddi is dealing with the very serious situation of not having enough food or money for her family to eat even one meal per day. Sofia makes this unfortunately discovery and keeps the secret, only deciding to break it when she realizes that her friend’s health is more important than keeping a secret - a lesson in and of itself. But this book also teaches a sneaky lesson about healthy foods, and what foods are special treats. And I love that Maddi is not one-sided - the poor hungry girl - but has talents of her own that help Sofia overcome her own challenges. The last page includes discussion questions, suggestions for kids on how to combat childhood hunger, and a website link for more information.
